Quick question regarding my 11m Best Yarga. It enjoys turning from a c into a u ie it likes curling up until the wing tips are almost touching. It does this largely when turning. Am I being dumb, can't work out why this happening - leading edge too soft? Have pumped it up pretty hard. Any help much appreciated

too much tension on the back lines, set the kite up with the front lines connected closest the kite and the steering lines furthest away.
pull in the depower as well, if you have to pull on lots of depower find a way of lengthening the steering lines.

a slingshot does this just as much as any badly tuned kite

First get someone experienced to check your line lengths, maybe Kitehard can help you out there?
Second if they are OK, then I think you may have one of a small bunch of incorrectly sewn kites. We had an 11M Yarga that would touch its tips together and flybackwards into the water if you loaded it up, Best replaced it to the original owner, and I made a poncho out of the dud kite!

hi cat,
this can happen with most c kites if the y of the center lines is too high up, usually it occurs with 5 line kites that are being flown without the 5th line but using the same bar setup. if thats the case put the 5th line back on, dont know if your kite is a 5 line or not or used to be so hope that helps

many thanks for the replies. It never goes as far as touching tips or flying backwards so hopefully it's not badly sewn. Lines appear to be spot on, use the same set up on my 2 other kites and no problems once of which is a yarga 9m. Using a four line set up as opposed to five line which should be fine for an 05 yarga I'm presuming. Will pump up rock like, tweak back lines as suggested and if all else fails call the guys at Adreanlin Rush from whence it came.

forgot to mention the problem only really occurs when turning the kite or during a gust, appears to be normal shape at other times.

Contact Joe at ARSA, it sounds like there is something wrong with the kite. If your 9M flies fine on those lines then you 11M should too.
The yarga does not need to be pumped rosk hard, just firm.

I have one of these 05s, your info is not correct cat, the 05 Yarga was designed by Peter Stiewe to be flown with a 5th line.

Also make sure you're using a Best bar! Many other bar designs would pinch the leading edge of a Yarga into a slight U shape due to the higher V that's formed with the front lines, which would cause the LE to fold in the turns. The previously-mentioned point about the kite being a back line flyer is is also very true: front pig tails shortest, back pigtails longest on perfectly equal lines.

Set up as per spec, it's a super stable, fun kite.

Enjoy,
Bo

I also have the 05 11m Yarga and have had problems with it doing strange things. It has a bad habit of falling backward out of the sky. I've checked line lengths and tried a few different things but still not 100%.
I was also told they were designed to be flown with a 5th line, which I do. My other kite is a 05 15m Yarga and it flies like a dream.

Bo, you mentioned something about long and short pigtails? I'm not sure what you mean.

Many thanks for all the replies. In repsonse to Bo I use a Gaastra bar and lines, 4 line, V in the front lines very near the bar so there should be no issue there. Front lines near the kite back lines away as suggested, firmly pumped up, not rock hard. So from all info it appears either the kite is shafted or I need a 5 line set up. Will call Joe at ARSA as suggested. Many thanks again.

Yup, definitely the 5th line then. It was clearly stated back in 05 that the kite was 'designed for a 5th line using the new 05 Kick Bar'.

Do yourself a favour Cat and persevere, by rigging a 5th onto your Gastra bar (the kite will have a 5th line attachment on the LE) Flew a 13 and 11 for a full season with that set up, perfect, stable, safe, problem free while heavily used. Loved them madly, until they were replaced this year with Waroos.

Browndog, all I meant was: attach the front lines to the knots closest to the kite and the backlines on the knot furthest away form the kite. This ensures that the kite is flying mainly on the front lines. Angles the kite as intended, fast turning, little bar pressure and ensures the tips don't flare...

cheers Bo much appreciated. I've kited for years but have no idea how to convert standard 4 line bar to 5 line. Any tips?

Uhm, not sure how the Gastra bar looks. A simple setup would be to add a metal ring somewhere on the bar's front line depower webbing. Pull the 5th line through and tie on another ring. Clip your safety leash on that ring when you ride, so that when you release the kite's chicken loop in an emergency the kite flags to the 5th line. Add a stopper ball if you don't want the bar riding up all the way to the kite...you should be able to get the hardware from Choice Kiteboarding in Hamilton Hill.

For more details of a 5th setup, check this out: http://media.bestkiteboarding.com/manuals/5thLine_manual.pdf

PS Your kite should have come with a bridle line with multiple attachment knots to allow you to adjust the 5th's length. If not, just make one by knotting an old line, attaching it to the kite. It should be slightly longer than the 'depth of the C' of the kite.
