I stopped at Gunnamatta on a drive looking for some wind to kite. 2m sets and around 20 knot SSW. It looked awesome but a little challenging for me.
Where are all the surf kiters? Why were there no hard core dudes out there slashing those waves? I might have gone out if there were other kiters riding.

I'm visiting too, saw the same 20knots, great waves, but wind was straight on-shore. Drove over to Inverloch yesterday, about 2hrsfurther east - flat water open rivermouth behind sandbars and about 10 kiters. Some good looking point setups around there too with flat ledges of rock that the wind whistles over and nice waves behind.
I'm staying at Tootgarook on M Peninsular if you want to go hunt some kiting spots around here, give me a call 0458 769 018 Greg

I'm mostly curious. There's usually a fair number of guys out in the surf on the west coast but I've never seen anybody on the east. I did ride Gunnamatta once in lovely clean conditions and it was great. The surfers didn't seem to mind and I stayed well clear of them for most of the time.
I ended up at Balnarring. There were a couple of guys out at Flinders riding around in the rock pool. I would have liked to try the waves there but did not want to risk the reefs on the dropping tide.
Balnarring had a nice 20 knots with a lovely smooth flat section on the inside. A dolphin cruised through at one point. No waves though. The only downside is there is a reef at the upwind end and it creates congestion as everybody comes in to have a go at the glass.
I have a cunning plan to launch at Flinders and do a downwinder to Balnarring sometime.
BTW The Balnarring store does good coffee, fish and chips, enormous dimmies and a great classic Aussie burger with the lot. They have a good selection of kiteboarding mags to look at.

I kite the rye backbeach every day and I can say it is good - just get out there. I hurt my back a few days ago so I've been out of the water, it is a bit of a solo sport on this coast there only about 4 other guys I have seen kiteing around here which I know of, maybe a blow in now and again but not very often it might be due to the fact that the surf gets 4 to 6 feet+ alot but when below this hieght its great fun on a surf board just check swellnet if coming up from melbourne to see what the swell size is doing and low tide easier getting off the beach. Wind anything from 20 knots and up on the abom forcast as most of the time its less on the backbeach if anyone needs a hand I would be happy to point them in the right direction or a kite if my backs good for it 0402851718 craig.
