thanks to the BF appeal we get a week at Bright starting tomorrow.
have borrowed my sons snow board.
take a 7 and 10m Bandit Dos.
Now where do I go?
why spoil a perfectly awesome sport by ****arseing around with a kite????
scooting around on flatlands in the wind - yawn. don't you get enough of kiting on the water?.-reminds me of a bunch of potheads trying to make bongs out of everything they see! Oh look a wheelchair. maybee I can tow myself orund on it with my DOS.
Has anyone tried kiting behind____ (insert anything here) Just because you have one interest, can't you leave it behind and have a break from it? If I was going to the snow I would be leaving my kite at home, praying for no wind and purchasing a lovely lift ticket.
ah the old downer comment based on ignorant bliss .
here is why I do it and have done so since 1996.it gives me access to the backcountry without the trudging .the backcountry is not only beautiful there are spots that rival anywhere in the world for terrain and snow quality. Two of my favourite spots are on the ramshead range .Last year I had one of my best weeks ever with a bunch of mates .We went down late in the season booked out the lodge for a week and bought a 5 day ticket for $320.
First day rain efffected snow that had frozen overnight .Dust from out west had turned the hill red .No wind so we downhilled .Pretty much no one there and cut fresh tracks in the weird red snow for most of the day .the quality was surprisingly good .next 2 days blizzard and freshies .Resort skiing again .Next day no wind but beautiful sunny day .Walked to the ramshead and had a great day in the sun .No wind .Fianlly good snow and wind .Great day .Almost made it to kosci.Skied with Mike walker for 2 hours on the top of ramshead range .Great vista out to victoria. Not quite enough snow to ride the western face but had a great time for 2 hours on the lee side in freshies .Used kite power to race up the hill ,depowered and skied as if there was no kite on the way down.
Have had many great weekends at Seamans hut in the previous years and met some great people and great company around the pot belly at night .Bumped into a group from time mag doing a special on the snowy region and was shown some great nightime camera techniques .Managed to convince the time photographer that i had photographed a ghost. There is something special about standing out on the roof of Australia in the middle of the night and checking out the terrain and the stars
Snow kiting can be bloody frustrating .the wind in oz tend to be nuking or nothing .Mid winter on the main range can have plenty of line and kite destroying cauliflower ice .but when you find spot x or just enjoying the cjhallenge and the experience all the crap is worth it.
check out this site for some great shots and it will give you an idea of the terrain that is out there
