Anyone been - looks like there's 3 or 4 kitesurf resorts there - any recommendeations?

What about the wind at this time of year?

Or does anbyone know anywhere else in SE Asia good for wind right now?

Hey WFTW,

Mui Ne is windy but only from November on. Same goes for the rest of Thailand and most of Asia, they are all pretty much in the off season. Their season is similar to Oz summer.

There are about 7 schools in Mui Ne as I understand it, Only one IKO, a lot of cowboys as I understand it. Windy, choppy and very little beach. On the up it is cheap, summy warm and friendly.

Hope this helps,

Hey - Yeah - mui ne is a great place for kiting. I stayed at Full Moon Resort. Paid about 50 bucks Aussie a night. Ate on the street restaurants about 5 dollars a meal.

Wind comes up between November and February. I was there in February for 2 weeks. There was a period of 4 non windy days and then the others were bloody windy. Comes up at about 7am in the morning as North East. You'll be woken by the palm fronds. By the time you've eaten by 8.30 it will be about 15 knots. You'll want to do you're kiting by about 3pm because after this it hovers around 30-35knots and gets rather choppy.

The beach at Full Moon is very good for kiting. There is a safety hazard at full tide because there isn't much room for launch and land so have a buddy. Watch out for the Germans and the Russians in particular - they are a dangerous mob. Didn't give a frig about safety to themselves and others.

A particularly great experience was kiting from Full Moon down to the Novatel about 8km down the beach around a few headlands. You get to kite around some fishing ports and some great scenary. A taxi back from the Novatel was dirt cheap.

Also, if you hire a scooter (30 dollars full day), you can go up to the North around the Red Sand Dunes and further. There were some good looking spots around there too.

In all, was a great trip.

Do yourself a favour and rent a scooter...a little 125 cc ripper. Do a week-long deal and you can get them for 60,000 Dong a day (a dong is worth the square-root of a dog****). once you have wheels, head into Mui Ne proper and hit up spots like the "cemetary". Places like the cemetary get the NE winds head on and aren't distorted by the big Mui Ne headland (making it pretty sketchy sometimes if there's a good bit of North in the wind and you're in a place like FullMoon...one of the east most resorts on Fullmoon bay). Anyway, the cemetary goes off and the seas get huge...over Chrissy / New Years earleir this year, my final days were capped off with some 35 knt nut busters....the seas were accumulating swell on the order of 3-4 meters...get out past the breakers and you're in hill country. The breaks can be pretty big, especially since they just jack up on the sand bars, but there is actually some good rideable surf (for kiting that is)...although winds will be on-shore and the waves being beach break...However, regardless, cemetary is a much better place to ride (IMO)with fewer people and plenty of terrain.
Go further up the coast and there are even more beaches. Just stay off of full moon bay because it'll put you off kiting in Vietnam.

kites aren't super cheap in vietnam for some weird reason are they..?

asking cause my parents are heading over there tomorrow morning for a month, they could bring me back more than a crappy t-shirt.
