My Naish Code's ball-in-valve valves don't work?

Hi,

I just bough a 2008 Naish Code, and it looks great. However, there is a problem: I can't get the balls in the valves to do their job. When I pull the nozzle of the pump hose out of the valve, I expect the ball to close the valve and stop air from escaping. Well, it's not happening....... :-(
Hence most of the air in the strut escapes before I can plug the valve :-(

I've tried squeezing the valve, holding the valve upside down, etc. etc, but nothing works. Do any of you have experience with this type of valve, and how to avoid this problem?

Thanks!

Try keeping the valve straight, something has moved out of alignment I suspect.

I had a kite that did this awhile ago caused by the valve being out of shape due to heat. Not sure whether it will be the problem on your naish, but you can try heating up the valve ball and cap by dipping it in warm/hot water then plunging it in ice water to return it to its original molded shape. If this doesn't work you can buy a set of circlip pliers (rounded long nose pliers) and grind the ends round. Pinch the valve stem with these after inflating or alternately get a one pump kite

why don't you try putting your thumb over the valve to stop the air coming out, and not even bother with the ball valve.

4 possibilities-

1- Your not pumping the struts hard enough
2- You are removing the nozzle to slow, yank it out fast.
3- The valves are deformed, this will fix itself after a few uses.
4- If all else fails make sure you hold the strut with the valve verticle (either pointing straight up or down) when you remove the nozzle.

I had a similar thing happen with my son's new SB1 5m.

Try leave the kite in the sun for a while to get the valve a bit supple, then manually ram the stopper ball into the neck of the valve stem using your hands, without any pressure in the bladder. Pop the ball out again and repeat a couple of times.

Then pump it up, hold the valve upside down and jiggle the ball into the seat before pulling out the pump nozzle.

I think in new kites the valve stems probably get out of "round" so the ball won't fit properly. Once it has been jammed in there a few times it gets the proper shape.

Technique works on a few other tight valves too, that we won't mention on a family friendly forum!

Alternativly, give a gentle spray of silicon spray into the valves.
Lubes everything up and allows the ball to slip in nicely

Turn the kite so that the stopper ball is facing towards the ground so it falls in place when you pull the pump nozzle out

Yep, I did my lessons on Naish kites back in 06 and that was the trick to get them to seal. Its a real pain to do.

I'm surprised you went with the Code in the first place and didn't go straight to the Cult! The Code looks like a school kite.

Thanks to Caution Kite and everyone for your input :-)

The struts of my 4.5sqm Code are now rock hard, after I realized that:

1. You need to pump the strut very hard
2. When pulling out the nozzle, do it QUICKLY

(Using the thumb is simply not possible with small struts)

Happy kiting!

They are the same, just no one pump and one sail colour to save $$$.
