I currently connect my leash the standard way to the yellow bungee cord which goes to one of the centre lines. On a couple of occasions I have accidentally unhooked while on the water and caused the kite to depower completely, this is fine however when its time to recover the bar its usually 10-15 meters downwind and is hard to get to.

By the time I get to the bar I have about 10 meters of centre line all around me and feel like its wrapped around some part of my body or has a knot in it, its a huge effort and timely to relaunch the kite.

Is this yellow line connection intended for when your getting used to the kite and then switch to a different configuration or am I missing something when trying to recover my bar and making it harder for myself?

Try hooking your leash to between the two black plastic balls on the depower line. When/if you drop the bar it'll pull the depower rope to 100% and the kite will fall to one side of the wind window but i'll be much easier to relaunch.

Unless you are intending to unhook (Which it sounds like you aren't, since you have your leash set on flag) try using the Donkey Dick/(chicken finger) on the loop to prevent you from accidentally unhooking. In all the time of using one I have never unhooked by accident.

If you want to progress to unhooking, unclip from the yellow flagging line and connect to your depower rope. You can do this after getting out in the water so that you still have the option to flag when launching and landing -
