The golf bags do work, but it depends whether the airline gives you free golf bag baggage allowances. Phone the airline first, check whether they fly golf clubs free, if they do, you shouldn't have too many issues, but some impose a 15KG weight limitation so you may need your normal luggage to be slightly lighter.

If you do use one and get asked at the airport what it is, always say it's a golf bag and NOT golf clubs. If you do, you run the risk of getting a rather large fine for lying to them.

A lot of the US airlines are now on to the "golf bags" and don't allow them. I have not had any problems here in Aus but with the price of gas and the weight of the bags they may become more aware. It is still woth having one though as they are great bags and even if it only works once it would have paid for itself - if they charge you excess baggage it gets very expensive.
Generally if they fly golf equipment for free it will not count toward your baggage allowance. If they don't you will go over your 20kg total baggage allowance very easily
