Just driving home from work at 5.30, stuck in the usual traffic jam, but watching a guy kiting just south of the Narrows Bridge where all the Jet Ski wally's normally hang out.

He jumps, crashes, lets go of the kite, no leash, it ends up going across 4 lanes of traffic and crash into the bus lanes in the centre of the freeway. Stopped the buses running as I went past. Cars driving over the strings, all very nice to see as the police arrived.

Anyway, that will be the end of kiting anywhere near the freeway...

A sad day for kiting.

I must have gone past this bonehead about 15 mins before and said " some guys just think they are too hot - that is the most stupid site I have seen someone kiting yet. Absolutely no margin for error". Not to mention a potentially fatal crash and hundreds of pissed of peak hour shumakers.
What an absolute d**k!!
Nice publicity

OMG! my sister told me that exact same story a year ago of someone kiting at that spot. But nothing bad happen like his kite flying on to the freeway. I wonder if it was the same guy, what a moron if it was! I hope he learnt his lesson....

I saw this kiter sailing around as I drove over the Narrows at 5:15pm. I couldn't believe that anyone would try and kite, by themselves, so close to the freeway, and bridge, and Mounts Bay road. There was absolutely no margin for error in any direction. My spirits sank totally and I crossed my fingers when I saw it.

It was a bright light green high aspect LEI kite. He wasn't going in and out more than a 100m at a time. I couldn't make out much else because I was about to hit the truck in front, or be swipped by the cars either side of me who were also watching the kite and not the traffic. Bloody dangerous when you consider it from any perspective.

I totally agree with the comments above. This kook is going to get us all banned everywhere. I can't believe that he let it go and wasn't even tied in. Fool.

i also saw the guy around 5ish not holding any ground

takoon wook bright green, hes the guy popping right in front of the launch @ peli (notice noone else jumps there?)

rigging on a beach 20 metres from a 6 lane freeway (maybe 8 there?) in a direct onshore with frontal winds. lofting and winter is a reality. did you think of CLEAR? your life? any other kiter being allowed to kite on the river again?

take a long hard look at yourself dude

perhaps members of the local kite community should issue a press statement to condemn this idiot and distance themselves from him and his actions...

this may help quell any public or official backlash that results from a "slow news day", an eager journalist, or a local pollie that got held-up in traffic.

it would also show the public that the majority of kiters are responsible upstanding community members not inconsiderate, self centered, thrill seekers like this FLIck-Wit

WAKSA committee members are going to contact the City of South Perth and the Police Department tomorrow morning. The intent being to let them know that this gentleman doesn't represent the majority of responsible kiters, and to try and get his contact details so we can discuss the incident with him.

Sad and funny at the same time.

I saw this guy put his kite into the tree at pelican point last week. He took about 20mins trying to get it out

I saw him as I drove past at 4:15. Could not believe it. This guy needs more than a talking to. A huge fine for starters and maybe any time the WAKSA folks spend on this should be billed back to him at a very high rate. THEN destroy all his kiting equipment.

The way I see it is that if he was out for almost an hour he must have some small clue. For someone with that much time with a kite there can ba absolutely no excuse for this sort of behavior. This is NOT an accident. It is reckless endagerment and he should be charged.

Post whatever you can on the guy (name, car type etc) so if he turns up he gets the welcome he deserves

I was watching him in disbelief from the South of Perth YC. What a complete **** wit. No wonder all the traffic was backed up on the freeway.

As Jan said this idiot kites at peli a bit and is just an absolute nightmare He comes screaming in to the launching zone, tries to pull some trick all of abot 1.5 meters from the beach. I gave him a speach while I was out on the water, but it didn't seem to make any difference. As far as I'm concerned this bloke got exactly what was coming to him, it's just a pity the rest of us get dragged through the ****e because of his overt display of stupidity. Congrats to WAKSA for getting on the front foot with the relavent authorities regarding this peanut.

sounds like a majority of people doin the old come in close to the penut gallery on the grass to pull a move as close to the wall as possible....

as for the person kiting along como to the narrows last year, that was me. i kited for a while along there starting at the jetty and cruisin down toward the narrows but always stopped before i got to the jetski area. in the right direction it can be a great spot, super smooth and sometimes there are little breakers to pop off, and you get it to yourself.
no troubles with the freeway, but yes very silly goin near the narrows.....
could have been a cool stunt for the next up and coming movie.....
reminds me of the old movie with the rag doll with the afro tied to the kite dragging over the rocks at kite beach.
whats that guys name again???

I think this guy could have made the Darwin awards! Some people are unlucky when it comes to the gene pool, at least someone's trying to remove this blot on humanity. I would have slashed his kite, in the interest of every kiter and the public, if I'd seen that happen.

Suprised the kite didnt have "Coca-Cola" of "Nokia" written all over it flying there. If your gonna put yourself on the 'gimp of the year' list, atleast get paid for it.

Makes you think maybe there is a need for people to obtain liscences before flying these things, might be the only way to keep the sport from being banned.

O.K hate to piont the finger but if this is infact the person we all think it is .He is about 20 years old and has dark brown hair with undercut short sides .He speaks with a accent ,i think he is from europe or some where and kites at peli piont with a light green and blue takoon wook .
About a week ago a group of us where waiting for the wind at peli piont and decided to have a pleasent chat with him about the disreguard that he shows for safety and other people and he said that he is use to flying his kite over the trees and next to the beach and that it does not bother him . even when one of the guys mention that he saw him crash his kite in the tree it did not seen to bother him . heres hopeing that this time he has distroyed his kite so much that we will not see him for a while .
If i have got the wrong person i am sorry but from the sound of it i am spot on .
the thing that shi$ts me the most is that i think this kid is a tourist so once he has wreaked the kiting for the rest of us he can move on .
If the police want to talk to him i am sure about 20 of us down at peli can piont him out .

302 hits here and I will make the 6th person to see this clown.
Thats 2% - Perths pop. 1470000 - that makes an amazing 29400
ALMOST 30000 PEOPLE OUT THERE THAT NOW THINK "KITER = DICKBRAIN"
and even worse most will be thinking DANGEROUS DICKBRAIN

That will take an impossible amount of work, effort, good behavior, public rescues etc. etc. etc. to counter.
Not a bad hours work for 1 person

Can someone report in that they saw his kite shredded across the bull bar of a Mac Truck ........ please.

Great photo Perthdude, quick reflexes!

For the Police, it's just another chaotic day on the freeway........
The usual stupidity, flying objects exceeding 80 KPH near roadworks and the illegal parking of kites in the bus lane.

Stuff happens.

You obviously have to be a complete selfish p***k to ride a green/yellow Takoon. I've only seen two diff riders using this kite and both have behaved with the same complete lack of regard for themselves and everybody else.
Do Takoon give away free labotomys with these????
