I was watching Morning of the Earth yesterday for the 30th time and some of the guys had those wetsuit tops on that you mentiond! They were stylen!
Best surf movie ever.
<Windslave cleverly changes the subject>
From pimping on the forum to surf-lore and wetsuit vests.
(As modelled by Michael Peterson in Morning of the Earth.)
But it just so happens that MP is a fav subject of mine,
so I'm easily distracted from my thread topic.
In his heyday, Michael Peterson ruled the waves.
He owned Kirra.
No other surfer has ever dominated a surfbreak like MP did in the 70's.
Every surf session to him was a wave competition.
Oneday I witnessed Michael coming to blows with his own brother over a disputed wave.
Pity the poor ****er who dropped in on MP.
On those rare occasions, a high-pitched whistle would echo from deep inside the barrel,
followed by a hail of spray and then a blurrrr fanging down the line.
The drop-in would be left to pick up his jaw.
But back to the wetsuit vests and the Blast Shield :
I'm thinking WindWarrior guy was watching Morning of the Earth oneday,
and he spotted MP slotted in nicely wearing the vest and looking styley.
Bingo, WindWarrior guy has a 'light-bulb' moment and the Blast Shield is born.
Sure, it's OK for Michael, he's cosy and warm while slotted in the tight wet hole.
But what about the windfreaks exposed to the elements.
They need a shield to protect them from a cold blast.
Hence the name Blast shield.
They need a rubber shirt with metal flakes.
They need a full metal jacket (in camo print).
They need anti-freeze.
Footnote and true story :
Michael Peterson was quite a good windsurfer in the 80's.
However, his illness took hold and that was that.
Can you imagine if kiting had been around then ?
MP slotted deep while flying a kite. Awesome.
