Hi all,

Do you know if there is any area from where we can launch in westerly winds around Nelson Bay, without having to go to Hawks Nest?

cheers

It will depend on how much north is in the wind .Basically in the area around bagnalls beach ,conroy park and the park that is just to the east of the sailing club near corlette here is the link on sandy point rd (the park near the 'S" in Sandy point rd on the google map near kanangra AVE
www.google.com.au:443/maps?q=bagnalls+beach&ie=UTF-8&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&sa=N&tab=wl

if its on youu'll see the locals out there no doubt .go there .id say Baz will be lurking around here and will see the post and will give better details .Watch your launch particularly at high tide .Not much beach and lots of trees that eat kites

Lachlan has got it pretty well on the money. I would only add that as the wind tends to the west the gustier it becomes at Bagnalls, making Conroy Park the prefered option until it gains a southerly component then its off to Birubi we go! The other thing of note, is its best to kite on an incoming tide if the westerly is a little light, otherwise you will end up in the current line and a fair walk back to either Baggies or Conroy.
Lurking with intent,
Baz.

Thanks guys, very nice of you to share the info. I went there for the week-end. What a great place to live! I only managed to get a short kite session at Fingal Bay, but had a beautifull surf on Saturday at One Mile, good size swell and light offshore wind...
cheers
Jacques
PS. the water in Nelson Bay area was brown... can't wait to come back when the rain stops (if ever!) and it is cristal clear again!

Hey Jacques, were you the guy with the black/blue kite? Also the french accent? ... I'm guessing it was you because your name is French and I didn't see many other kiters out on the bay that week.

If that was you I was the guy who said hi while you were setting up, I'd broken my board that morning; I think I told you that too.

*Edit* I was also out at One Mile on Saturday surfing... cleanest waves I have seen up there ever and I go there 4 or 5 times on holiday each year.

Je peux parler un peu de francais!

This place is becoming renowned for sharks... The only ones I've seen have been small, nothing scarey really.

What about Stockton? I mean from a wind point of view, it always seems to be blowing, but I've never seen people out there, granted it is a 30 or 40 kms beach... I know there are lots of sharks there too . The waves seem super messy though.

Hi Jimmy! yes I am the Frenchie (can't help the accent... I am always spotted ) nice meeting you, such a shame for your board, hopefully you found a replacement for it by now!

I obviously have been very lucky then!! What a nice memory, this session...

@Peter_W... I tried to remain "incognito" but you recognised me!!

I was at both One Mile (surfing) and Stockton (kitesurfing) over the past week. Awesome spots. I spoke to the lifeguards on Stockton beach after a kite session on Saturday and they said there had been 67 sharks tagged along the beach with one making it all the way to NZ when tracked, that particular one being a great white. It didn't seem to be a wind up, but draw your own conclusions. They could have just been taking the mickey out of a dumb queenslander.
Great to know I was at one mile on a good day, got dolphins there this morning and yesterday morning with a few nice waves, though with my limited surfing skills it was pearls before swine.

Yeh, Stockton is definantly the sharkiest place I know of in NSW, I wouldn't be suprised if they did find so many sharks there.

However I do come from Cape Town origionally and yeh... thats GW heaven/hell depending on how you look at it.

Unfortunately there is no wind at the moment :-(. Try checking around the entrance +/-15 minutes (or look on google maps), or Umina which is about 40 minutes south if the southerly comes up tomorrow.

If you like flat water try canton (SW) or picnic point(WSW - NW) at the SW side of the channel.

thanks for that, drove around the lake and checked out all the spots but sad state of wind.
Still, nice sunny day though and soldiers beach looked like a nice small swell for a surf. Will wait for wind. Cheers
