Hi there, took some lessons last year and I just bought myself a new 2005 naish kite. Is this dangerous to learn on? It has one line attached to hand ...didn t see this before ...

Yes it is...What model is it?

It would be far safer to use as a classic beach shelter.

You'll be right, just attach the other line to foot and a chuck in a few star jumps to launch

People have learnt on them in the past but kite gear has come a long way since then. Even a 2010 kite will be much safer. As mentioned by others grab a 2nd hand or demo kite. The guys at the shops will help you find something much safer and suited to your needs and budget. Kitepower in Sydney are always a great help
Ditch the 2005 kite, you will only spend the money you saved on medical bills for either yourself or someone else. I think you will find learning to be a little easier and less frustrating with a more modern kite too

Excellent question mate, and so good you've asked here 'cause a lot don't I reckon and they (unlike you) get into a whole heap of issues.

So yeah, as mentioned - get rid of it, especially the bar with the wrist "safety" line. They are ancient history mate. If you have to use that kite due to costs, etc, then at least get a more modern 4-line bar with no more than 18m lines for your own safety. But really - don't bother. Plenty of good modern kites online here for under $500! Ozone C4, Cabrinha Switchblades, Naish Park, etcc

If you are in Sydney i have a 2008 that you can have to learn on, it'd be a mile in front of that.

I started kiting a few years and in my research on buying a beginner 2nd hand kite, the general consensus was around 2010/2011 there was a significant improvement in safety features. I was never sure exactly what but I limited my search to only kites after than date.

You might find some kites a little bit older that were ahead of the safety game but 2005 is a stretch. I wouldn't use it, except maybe as a hammock waiting for the wind to pick up. Actually that would be kinda cool.

I did many months on three of them cabs 06/07 and learnt heaps just dont try anything silly
Maybe just extend the safety by attaching rope/extra release leash from wrist part to harness back.when u release it wont be on yr wrist then..and you will look kind of normal

It will dangle a bit but will act like todays safety on yr harness.its limited to...cruising..jumping....avoiding people...upwind..downwind..lots of kms..and some waves

Yeah, I'd say probably don't do that. Not knowing the exact bar that came with the Naish, there will probably be heaps of slack and easy to tangle around bar and person. The flag out line on that vintage I don't think went through the bar causing it to tangle easier.

To respond to the OP, sure, we all learned on these kites 15 years ago but also that is all we knew and that's what everyone had. We compared our progress and experiences to those around us. If you were to compare how you are learning/progressing on that gear today compared to others on modern gear, it will be like you're speaking a different language. There are many different techniques between the two.

Best to get something 2010 or newer. It will probably be a more pleasant experience.

I did it..worked a treat but yes slacky
But true something like a slingshot fuel/rev 09/10 is 200 -250 bucks and heaps better bar, lines

I say if you allready bought it use it with a longer safety until u find a 2010 one.nothing wrong with that or hurry.good luck..

Don't buy a fuel to learn on.......
Probably not the easiest kite to learn on.
Relaunch is a prick if you havnt had experience.
Buying a first kite is a bit like your first car.....
You are goings to crash, and break stuff.

Go something cheap, popular (spare parts accessible )
Slingshot rally or rev.
Cabrinha switchblade.
Naish ride
Airush dna
North evo
Liquid force envy
All really good beginner kite's.
One of these or something similar is perfect.
But don't go buy a direct connected c-kite.

Kite + board time = progression.....
So the more time you spend trying to relaunch or screwing around trying to fix things, the slower you will learn.
Buying one of the big 5 brands also means you can build a quiver of the one kite. It's not hard to find the same kite in different size's, which is important (not vital though) because you can be comfortable with how the kite flu's & it's characteristics. You will be far more confident when over powered if you know the kite and how it will fly.

Look for kite's with 'sheet & go' characteristics.
You can & will learn on SLE hybrid kite's, but you will learn quicker on a bow kite. Instant depower when sheeting out.

That's my 2cents worth.

Do your research, and before you buy anything, ask around and make sure it's suitable for you.

Hi again
My input on it is when u look at,other newer bar and lines I think the one on the naish is probably really crap..but## from 09/08 kites the bar safety isnt on the wrist.the way, around it is extending leash which flaps about but its safer(allthough longer).i and am sure others have learnt loads on those kites
The kite,itself u have,though is prob fine
Anyway..you'll get the hang of it..

I learnt on Fuels, anything newer than 2011 relaunches fine.

Not the case for the older ones.

My 2 bobs is get a switchblade. You will learn heaps quicker and they are pretty good kites.

But the kites mypassingwind suggested is bang on the money.
