Seeing that there are so many shops that use this forum to promote there businesses .I want to know if you could tell me how the larger kiting companies distribute there product to you and what kind of margins you expect .
The reason i ask is that I have invented two kitesurfing safety accessories which i have now patented and am hoping to manufacture and sell globally through a licensing agreement to a companies like Cabrinha .
But if this dose not happen i am willing to start my own company to sell it under but know little to nothing about how kitesurfing products are distributed and the margins the shop expect to make .

Any help with names of people to contact or information regarding distribution would be kindly appreciated .

Hey Jags,

Great to hear you've got a new idea and even better a patent - that's quite an effort itself.

If you've got worldwide protection of your idea, contact the companies direct via their website, discuss your idea, see if they are on the same page as you, ensure they are cool to deal with and negotiate an income and outcome that suits you both... there's a lot of phone calls & emails to achieve this .. just remember .. failure is the path of least persistence!

Good luck .. Laurie

Goodluck, with your invention, I would offer similar suggestions as Laurie, though my experience with patents, suggest there is no such thing as a world wide patent. A patent has to be applied for in every country individually.

Thanks every body that replied and to the people that send me an email i will reply to them shortly .

I would love to tell you all what the products are and how they work but at the moment the patent is only pending and after the money i have spent designing the products and am about to spend on tooling costs i would hate to some how have somebody steel my idea .

what i have found out in the research that i have done ,and corect me if i am wrong .
Is that different companies (brands) are popular in different contries .
So if i try to sell or lincence my ideas to only one brand i am really just reducing the number of people that will buy the products .
And seeing that the estimated total number of kitesurfers world wide is 100,000 even if i get 25 % of that i wont be retiring soon.

It seems that the best way to sell the products is to start a company to sell it under and also approach other companies and ask if they want to buy the products with there brand name on them.

Another thing i found out is that alot of brands (companies) source a lot of there equipment from factories in china and only design there kites and boards , even the bars are sourced.
Makes you wonder why a set of fins cost so much ?
Thanks for all the help
Rob

P.S If it does not take off both products will be available from the back of my car at a kite spot near you . in about 10 weeks

Jags,

There are many options available to you and I would advise talking to somebody about this - who work with new innovations.

By just approaching the large kite surfing companies with the idea is normally not enough and many innovations fall down in this area. Maybe you should sell the license to them, collect a royalty and let them manufacture it? What invest in tooling if the big brands will do it?

Great to here that you have a patent and is this in OZ or worldwide?

Best of luck with the product and keep up the good work.
