Hello,

I have had 3 hours in the sport (one lesson) and am close to cracking out the credit card to purchase a new kit.

I am 68kg and I have been researching the GK Sonic 11m. I hear that self launch is a big dodge but I like the idea of the de-power properties and the large wind range.

Would anyone recommend any other kites, or any boards for that matter (though it seems boards are a little easier to choose). I will be learning on flat water but eventually want to get into the surf.

Thanks in advance,
Rich.

am new tyo the sport as well, and am doing the same thing, i have heard that the bow kites are near impossible to ride unhooked, so if riding waves is for you this is probably not the best idea? this is coming from a guy that i know who has been riding for 5 years.
just thought you should know. yet are good to learn on....

Cool. I guess it may be beneficial to learn on the bow then progress to whatever later on for the surf stuff.

look into the peter lynn range. I have a 13m bomba. and it rocks. Really stable. when i let the bar go it stays at the zenith. heaps of depower. one of the best things i like about it is, its really easy to relaunch after a crash... if it does crash. and its quicker to rig than a LEI.

try and have a go of one. u'll be surprised.

I fly Wind Wing Rapture, awesome kite, its a 12m. I flew it yesterday in very gusty 30 knott winds. Massives of depower, safe. look into it.

"de-power properties and the large wind range. "
f-one m-5 if you want the more adjustable 5th line setup.. or the new impact is supposed to be simpler with same benifits of 5th line range. these kites have a similar range to bows, without the bow feel, benifits or disabilities

I also fly a [insert name here] (wow we must be twins) it is awesome. 500% Massive depower, relaunches quick, great safe kite, boosts higher, makes all other kites obsolete..

dude seriously try as many kites as you can and see what you like.. any 2005 2006 kite is good enough to learn on and progress on

And 2004 kite for that matter..

Take my advice, there are loads of really good 2004 kites around that would be great to learn on, at bargin basement prices. If its your first kite DO NOT buy new you will only regret it. kite you will punish your first kite. Ive already seen 2 crossbows in tree's with large tears down them. If only they had bought second hand.

Plus being a newby you dont know what direction you are going to take in your riding. A year on down the track you will have a better idea, and you can swap in your older kite to another newby, then by the latest and greatest hat suits your style/level.

my suggestion on kite.

flow , yarga, co2, vegas , boxer - all great kites that could potentially see you through to expert level

dude its not about being taught right its in general how good your kite flying skills are.. i've seen people how continueously(bad spelling) crash their kites after tons of real decent lessons.. and others who just pick it up like that and within a week or 2 never crash their kites until they startin trying moves

exactly if you see yourself learning trick you are likely to crash your kite onto the water quite often.. Buy 2nd hand..

That's way u should buy new kites, as they are made strong and usually have a warrenty. If you have got a 2nd hand kite there is no warrenty and usually sun hardend, bladders are **** and lines are crap and worn.
If money is no issue why would you buy second hand?
You can bash a new kite into the water all day long and it should be right.
You buy a second hand kite $1000 and crash it and rip it in your first few sessions and now your kite is worthless!!!

I've had 1 lesson and purchased a NEW kite(switchblade 12 mtr) this afternoon.Why?,becuase I can.
Why a new kite?, for reliability(as mentioned by do.what I want),greater wind range and piece of mind. Will I regret it,"I dont think so",time might tell.
I've been looking into this for a couple of months now and couldn't be phucked with the second hand gamble.

Devil fish qoute:If its your first kite DO NOT buy new you will only regret it. kite you will punish your first kite.

aaaaahhh,"will",the most misused word in the english language

i opted for second hand as i intend to give my kite a good thrashing - then when my skills improve ill lash out for a new sparkling kite . If i had the money i prob would get a new one, but im too busy to work as ive got kiting to do

If you going to go for a new kite try 2006 Force gear.
I high quality, good safty system and will last.
Also they are cheaper than other brands but still fly similar to the fuel.
I was watching a couple of the force team riders yesterday and the kites and boards looked pritty good.
But you can also pick second hand kites very cheap in good nick.I had to do a repair on one that a guy pick up for $270 complete and that will last him two years or so and he will still be able to sell it again.
The bow kites are not that great for beginners, there great for gusty conditions but thats no good for learning and the saftey system is no better than the fifth line.

but once you get experienced you thrash your kites anyway more so to a certain degree. SO i don't think itt really matters unless you want to progress to become someone who crashes their kite once a year and try no tricks.

Looking at this thread, it is obvious that everyone has their own opinion and most of the opnions are different...

Easy option: buy second hand and no worries when you hang it out in the trees to dry. I'm sure you can find good s/h kites on this forum. I've never had new and I have some great kites!

Second option: Buy new. The kite that you want or READ about and take care of it.

Alternative: Go to the shops and TRY THE DEMO MODELS and find out EXACTLY what kite you feel comfofable on and then consider new or second hand in that model...

Or buy my old ones, he he...

Buy a bow kite. Apart from the 100% depower, everybody keeps talking about them so it makes you feel warm and fuzzy on the beach having the controversial "kite of the moment"
