The Rifle range operates every Saturday from 1.30 - 5.00 pm .

They have informed us that a couple of kiters have regularly been disrupting shooting by coming past when the flags are up .

It will only be a matter of time before they get tired of this and take some action . This will probably be fines and gear confiscation .

This is a freindly warning to those that are doing it if you are unaware of the rules around the rifle range .
While the flags are up , you cannot go past unless you are about 1km to sea I think .

Shouldn't be too much of an issue till next season , but something to remember .

Thanks
Mike Bergman

i have no idea where you are talking about but why would a rifle range be shooting into the sea? it just sounds kinda wierd that you cant go kiting.
p.s. cant you just go past it out to sea then?

Remember it's the SAS barracks. Fines and gear confiscation could be the least of you're worries

Swanbourne beach is in Perth, WA. The rifle range is next door to the SAS barracks, which just happens to be located adjacent to some PRIME sea side property. The range is wedged between two remarkable beaches

At Swanbourne Beach in Perth, WA.

They fire out to sea cos if they fired inland they'd probably kill everyone instead of just a few stray kiters...

You can physically kite out 1km from shore to get past, but then you are breaking the laws that say if you go beyond 200m from shore you have to carry a life jacket, 2 flares, a sea anchor etc. Unsure of the official wording, but kiteboarders unfortunately fall under that category of craft. So technically we are all breaking the law by kiting as we usually do, as we often go 200m+ out to get upwind but they turn a blind eye to this. As you can easily tell, there is a big difference between 200m and 1km off shore regards safety etc.

So yes, Mike is spot on that all kiters need to avoid doing this this unless you have contacted the Camplbell Barracks at Swanbourne prior to check there is no shooting scheduled (as is the case for the WAKSA downwinder on Sunday 9th April).

just go 1km out around it then!!!! what you think someone will actually be bothered to be there ready to pounce and inforce the law (wether that is the law or not.) The laws for queensland and new south are completly different regarding jetskis.

just wondering how we can be classified as a craft, as our boards are so small we need to be powered to get up on them and they barely float. Anyone know what there definiton of craft is, and it is highly unlikely they will be out there although the rifle range may call marin in harbours.
Thanks

There is more than one danger at Swanbourne..................watch out for the rock spiders up in the dunes.

More seriously MikeN, how are you supposed to know the rules regarding the 1km if there are no signs. To the average Joe a red flag means nothing?

Is there anyone out there that know the rules for sure?

Any Swanbourne Locals on the forum.........I noticed a guy called spider the other day???

I can't understand why the military can't do their shooting in the desert.........duh, not far from here. And put up some nice service housing where they are shooting now, would do lots for morale.

Seems silly, to have a shooting range where the sqm price is over 10K. But for the time being, dem's da rules I guess.

People need to know this about Swanbourne though, especially those not reading this forum. There is a huge influx of new people to WAAAAAA, and that brings more kiters who don't know the local "rules." I'm afraid that all us locals really need to introduce the new arrivals to the ins and outs of kiting in WAAAAAAAA.

Im a fellow kiter who also happons to be in the army reserve.
We shoot there on a regular basis and for those who cant see the bouys marking the 1km exclusion zone, stop taking drugs before you kite!!! There are also look out towers at the north and south end of the range near the beach which will have red flags raised on live fire days. We dont shoot towards the ocean eather we shoot towards the north in to a massive mound of sand dune. the 1km exclusion over the ocean is just a precaution, a rickashay from a high velosity wepon can go a massive distance.

... and it can do nasty things to your leading edge! or is that head

Just watchout for when the gazundas do a live firing; those harpoons come out of the water with no warning whatsoever... and they can really mess your day up!

by my dictionary -
craft = an activity or occupation which produces a skillful or artistic outcome

DOH - doesnt sound anything like my kiting
Does this mean I can drop the flares & anchor
