Speaking with a non-kiter the other day who was interested in learning but had one main fear surrounding the experience. I have heard a few over the years mostly are concerned that they will get dragged out to sea, this one however was that the kite would fall out of the sky, hit them and then they would somehow drown. Understandable not knowing the ins and outs of kiting but amusing none the less.

I guess this sparked two questions for me:

Has anyone had a kite fall out the sky and hit them?

What are some other interesting non-kiter fears you have heard?

For me when I explain about kitesurfing most crew get pretty scared when they hear the answer to the most commonly asked question "So how much does the equipment cost"

Yes, after a botched front roll that also left me 500 yards out past breaking waves, wrapped in my lines. Fun, fun, fun

When i was learning i got lofted at a notoriously lofty spot. As the kite slowly hindenburged it lovingly draped me in one of the steering lines and a good part of the centre line. The kite almost got my head when it hit the water. Luckily the kite fell into the wind and stayed into the wind which gave me enough time to frantically unwrap myself.

That was also the day i bought a line knife.

Valid fear in my books.

When i was learning i had someone jackhammer their kite into the water about half a meter from my head, full power. The noise and the force of the air and water being displaced was pretty scary, been paranoid about being hit ever since.

People should stop perpetuating BS on these forums. Your own kite falling down and hitting you not going to happen.

Someone else's kite yes definitely.

kite landing on head or nearby = injury to pride and renew vow to never to go out in light winds

However I saw a very large foil kite today at Hampton not luffing in light winds but moving around like a snake.

That could bite.

If only that were true... there are still kites that'll Hindenburg when the weather is right.

Anyone remember that video of the guy landing by lobbing the bar downwind then catching the kite?

Hidenburging and a kite falling down and knocking you out is two totally different things. Non kiters are going to read this and then think its something they should be scared of.

Was replying to that... You *can* get hit by your own kite.

But knocked out.... **** son, if people are worried about that, they should look up the statistics for "deaths in the home" and stop being such enormous pussies and enablers of OS&H craziness.

Now, I'm off to the "Licence" thread...

Someone hindenburged their kite right next to me on the beach, he then tried to relaunch as I was tangled in his lines. The kite must have caught the wind and one centreline hit right next to my eye, as it slid along my skin it cut from the corner of my eye to my temple.
The guy gave me a thumbs up, turned around and kited off.

A few months back Lou w. put a video on his Facebook ending with him purposely hindenburging his kite then catching it. Looked pretty cool!

My wife stalled my 14m in light wind and it fell and smacked her on the head. I captured it on my go pro complete with me laughing in the background. She wasn't very amused and of course it was all my fault...

A prospective new kiter is worried about a kite falling on his head??

That explains a hell of a lot.

let the kite back stall down the window, then let it shoot back up, the momentum carries it above our head and it falls out of the sky, if the wind is light enough it won't get pushed back far, hence landing on your head.

I was watching kiters for couple of years before i got into the sport. My only fear was (for kiters) to be lofted and flown on powerlines/trees. Didn't see anything else too dangerous or non-manageable.

Also, back then i found kites, kitelines and looping/jumping near beach or intentional lofting on the ground quite interesting. Never thought it could get out of control. Lines were the last thing i would put on "high lethal" list. Never thought they could do something wrong :|
