Had my 5th line break whilst mid air boosting. Not really sure why this would of happened,
It was reasonably gusty at the time, however my bar and lines I bought new last november, so u would think they would still have some life left in them. It broke about 2/3 along the line towards the kite.

Anyone got any thoughts or had this happen problem with their 5th line?

Is the 5th line under tention? or just a safety feature on the Rebel?

I only ask as my kites have a 5th line system, however it's not a support line.
My 5th line is never under tension unless i pull it for instant depower.

If yours is the same, (non support line) you probably damaged it before you went kiting.

In that case, check your other 4 lines,

Once upon a time I had a steering line snap, I pulled my 5th line and it went snap too! and i went kitelooping down the beach for a few hundred meters on a 3 lined kite.

I think the 5th line is under some sort of tension especially when fully
Powered up and bar pulled all the way in as this is when it snapped.

Also with the north the 5th line is sewn in to the front line. Which could be weakened I guess from running up and down the line. (maybe).

I still have to have a proper look at the lines as they are still in a birdsnest
waiting to be untangled.

I have had this happen on all 3 of my Rebels, 2008 14m, 2011 11m and 2012 11m. The 5th line is definitely under tension. All of mine have broken during times of high loading with the kite looping while I am in the water being dredged. As I am obese I would regard the breakages as justified. I repaired the last breakage with some slingshot line and am happy with this (although this might just pass the stress to the next weakest component). Cheers.

The 5th Line is under tension above the Y but it sounds like yours broke below the Y??

If that's the case then it should only be under tension when the kites dropped on the safety.

As your lines stretch you need to adjust the red safety line at the knots to ensure it remains a little slack. This will also help your red line from getting stuck in the trimming cleat also.

The 5th line is definetely under tension on the north kites. I have the rebel (that I'm selling here!!) and Vegas kites but never had this problem. Sounds a little odd as surely all 4 of the other lines are under much more tension. Anyways at least it wasn't the other lines!!!

* the following is a post from my americano friend who is not a seabreeze member, however is very vocal concerning North 5th line. i thought he would have something valuable to say:
"Hey bro. i had my fifth line break on my very first launch of the kite. it is a brand new 2012 REBEL 10 meter. i got dragged 400 meters with no safety line to use on release. had to flag kite out on outside line. it happened again 6 months later while kitelooping in a high jump. Crazychris

So when you depower your kite and there's huge slack in your 5th line how much tension is it under?

Checked out the 5th line today after untangling all the lines, and it has
Broken after the Y-junction closest to kite, where it is under tension.

Hopefully I can get a new line just for that section not the whole thing, otherwise
Guess I will make one up.

Markie-So when you depower your kite and there's huge slack in your 5th line how much tension is it under?

Markie the 5th line is under tension on the 2 kites I have mentioned here. The Fuse and evo have the ability to run 4th or 5th line set up (hence the 5th line is not under tension). As I said I do find it odd that this line has snapped as I thought this WOULD BE under the LEAST amount of TENSION compared with the other 4!!!
I have not personally had this problem or heard of anyone else having this problem. Both kites should fly without the 5th line but surely not as well.
Unlucky I guess! BTW I fly heaps of different kites and honestly think the rebel is a very boring kite to fly! (unhooking and loops anyway)

Was told a while back that when fully powered up on the trim and pulled in all the way make sure the fifth has a little bit of slack on it. Need to keep adjusting this as the forward lines do stretch.

Have you used the lines for a while and did you keep tuning them? if not this could be the reason...or it needed replacing.

I have never had this happen.

And yes the fifth is tensioned, helps create the rock solid canopy the north range have.

That's pretty much what has happened eppo, full power bar fully in boosting,
And not tuning the 5th line. Will have to remember this once I fix bar. Cheers

By the sounds of jonopark's last sentence, I think he might be trying to bait u eppo :)

I doubt if jono is winding Eppo up, I've flown a 8m reb for the last two years and he's pretty well spot on...they are boring cause they're such an allround machine, nothing troubles them ! Except unhooked , loops ok

I second this, it is what it is. It is incredibly stable and the power so smooth. But forget unhooking and looping, unless you like to get hurt. And I know this from experience. Eventually got the technique okay to avoid most pain, must you have to be on your game.

This is why my brother is now the proud owner of my rebel and I now ride a far more technical kite with some race built into it.

Yabbin, creating slack in the 5th line at the adjustment knots will make little difference. The 5th line length above the Y (which is where your line broke) is controlled by the stopper ball below the Y junction. The break happens because the kite is being put under high load and wants to bend in the middle, this then relies on the 5th line to stop it bending. I have replaced that short section of line with a length of slingshot line and have had no problems since. The line segment is easy to replace as it just loops on.

Why slingshot line gdog. Is it stronger than the north one?

The Slingy front line is rated to 800lbs (from memory, correct me if I am wrong) which is about double that of a standard kite line. It literally is double the thickness of a standard line. Have yet to hear of one snapping........ sorry Gman, it is destined to break now.
