I stumbled across this site, and tried it, and it just looked so wicked once I figured out the technique to view these images...

So i'm wandering if anyone ever attempted taking any kitesurfing 3D shots... i suspect you'd need two very synchronized cameras sitting close to each other since you are taking shots of a moving object... It would look sick though...

3D photography has been around since the 1800s and produces some amazing effects. You have to have a bit of penchant to be able to cross your eyes properly to see the images without a special viewer. I'm fortunate in that I can do it instantly having practiced it for years. Some people stare for half an hour and still can't see the effect. Once you learn it, it's easy.

The trick is that you have to have a camera capable of taking two simultaneous images that are spaced approximately the width of your eyes in order for you to create the stereoscopic effect. You can simulate this with a standard camera by taking a shot then moving the camera a few cm to the right or left then taking another shot. Problem is that they have to be taken from the same distance from the subject, so the only way to do this while kiting would be using a stereoscopic camera that had been waterproofed in some way. Haven't heard of anyone doing it.

In the 1960s, "Viewmaster" was a popular toy for kids and produced some really cool images using a special viewer and insertable disks full of 3D images. I had one -- really cool.

As already mentioned in the previous post, stereo images are taken with two cameras spaced slightly apart taking a photo simultaneously ... a relatively cheap way to do this is using a range of Canon cameras and loading a modified firmware called CHDK

very nice, I wounder if you just shoot in rapidburst mode if that would work ?

You'd need to be lucky and it would waste heaps of "empty" shots using rapidburst ... CHDK can be used to turn the light sensor in the camera to a motion detector ... as so as it registers movement, liek lightning, it triggers the camera to take a photo ... its foolproof, just point the camera, start the motion detector program, then sit back and wait ... the camera will only take a shot when there is lightning or movement ... here is some more shots

Wow, awesome nasty storm over gerroa shot Aiolus!

I have taken quite a few 3D slides, like a viewmaster, but with a 35mm camera. The camera is mounted on a track, and as Rob described, you move the camera 8cm ish and take another shot. The issue with this is that you have two different moments in time.

Bring on the 3D kiting shots!

On an OT but kite photographic note, I just noticed that Canon have brought out their first waterproof compact camera, the D10, but I can't tell if it has interval shooting.....anyone?
