lol so true

how much do you weigh? i use a sonic 11m from 12-30 knots, it has one of the largest wind ranges of any kite available, partly because you can move the front and rear bridles around to enable you to drop more angle out of the kite with varying amounts of bar travel.

40 knots is a lot, in that region you're looking at a 5 or 6m bow kite, which would never get you going in 15 knots. perhaps a 7-8m bow would come close but you would be risking your life putting it up in 40 knots..... i guess the same can be said for any kite in 40 knots.

Most 9m bows should give you from around 15 to 30/35ish depending on your weight, skill etc. Anything over that will be impressive.

Heard the new ultra flats 7m's will give you 15-35+ but no reliable confirmations on that yet so it could be Greek mythology.

get a kite that handles 20-35knots on a twin tip and buy a light wind board(skimboard/wider longer twin tip/surfboard etc) for sub 20

I'm with you on this. I don't believe any 9m is going to be still going in 40 knots unless the rider is 120kg's.

I rode with a 9mtr Omega (high depower) in 35kts last Jan ... I weigh 85kgs ... and was using a 142FLX ... no probs ... don't know about 40kts though ... (we were using a pretty reliable anemometer in a contest situation, so I'm pretty sure it was true 35kts)

Hey I resemble that remark. We can't all be spring daisies now can we!

Nope, I think its about the perception of 40 knots. If the wind is blowing 30 knots its normally gusting to 35. If its blowing 35, its gusting to 40 knots. If its 40 knots its gusting to 45+.

So are we really classifying 30 or 35 knots as 40 knots simply because the gusts are getting that high? If so, thats not realistic, I've handled 35 knot + gusts on my 12m before but there is no way in hell I'd even consider taking it out in 35 knots.

We have a port authority bouy near where I kite with live wind speed internet access so i would say it is accurate and my new 10m flat 5 was getting a bit hard to handle at the top of the gusts to 45kn on a storm front a couple of weeks ago. On tuesday riding in just over 15kn same kite same board. I weigh 100kg . I think I have found the one kite quiver!!

seen the monkey griffin 12m do about 40knots and a 12m rebel. problem is there is a lot o' flappin and they don't last too long as they stretch like hell! 12m griffin will get going in less than 15knots too.

40knots????

Insane wind.
Check
www.bom.gov.au/lam/glossary/beaufort.shtml

41-47 knots
Slight structural damage occurs -roofing dislodged;
larger branches break off.
High waves;
dense streaks of foam;
crests of waves begin to topple, tumble and roll over;
spray may affect visibility.

Why would you want to kite?

I'm also prepared to call that as bull****. 45 knots at a wind meter on top of some building or out at sea is way different to 45 knots on the beach. I have often seen anything up to a 10 knot variation from sea buoys to shore.

Get someone to go to the beach with you and video the wind at consistently over 40 knots while you're on your 10m and I'll believe you.

I've windsurfed since I was 8 years old, I've now been kiting for 7years and have been blown off the water a few times in ridiculous winds. My friends who know me, have launched and watched as they have been to smart to go out. Plus I usually have the smallest kite having school gear and all. I was out on the 9m in 40 knots, no wind was not consistant, but consistantly gusty from prob 30knot base up wards above 40 note this is in a westerly at squids in a flat water environment, not that it was flat in 40 knots.. Wind can feel different depending on the pressure too..
Hope this clears things up a little,

Although the allure of a 1 kite quiver sounds quite intruiging, it's not that much fun. I have a TD1 14m, weigh around 80kg and ride a twin tip. I could use the kite in 13kts up to 25kts gusting to 30+. The sweet spot of the kite is around 13 to 18 kts. When its consistently over 22, you can kite but not having as much fun as the guys on the smaller kites - when the kite is so sheeted out it doesn't perform that well and you are constantly managing the situation rather than throwing the thing round like you would with a smaller kite. Also, you don't do all of your same tricks - you tend to be a lot more conservative because if things go wrong - you're stuffed.
I now have a 10m SB2 as my second kite and am much happier with the extra amount of fun that I van have in stronger winds.

Now thats the most sensible thing i have read in ages. If you want a one kite quiver then you need to give up something somewhere. Able to kite and able to kite how you want is completely different. Is also probably why i get a nasty niggle when i fly an "all rounder" kite.

Have to admit he is spot on, one kite quiver is great if you just get the same breeze everyday..

yes see 30 base gusting 35 - 40 is believable but then you should say a average liek 35 or something similar. strongest ive been out on my 9m waroo was 32 consistant gusting 36 and i was kiting between to large land masses so it was being venturied. but flat water so its easier to edge off and i had it fullly detuned. i mean look at that mental boost that guy did in that vid posted earlier n he was in 42 - 45 on a 7m!

people when judging the wind have a tendancy to over estimate its power, i know as i have done the same in the past. now i just use the results on the graphs as my judgement or if someone has a windmeter il use that as judgement.

A two kite quiver is the way to go

With the bigger wind range of kites these days you can have more fun and stay on the water in the kite you rigged up even if the wind drops or increases.

Sorry I forgot ... got to clarify that 35kts last Jan ... It was in Asia and hence they say 35kts in a hot/humid climate has not got the same power as 35kts in a cooler climate...

I spent 1 month kiting in Maui Hawaii....
according to the wind reports... the strongest days (this May) were gusting to 35knots....
all I can say is no one was riding 9 m kites on these days... it was 4m to 7m biggest!... some guys there only ride 7s
The sand stings like nothing else and the power is insanse... I really doubt anyone has a lot of fun in 30knot wind with a 9... (unless they are 100kg or so..)... so assuming that was 35 I doubt many people can kite in anything like avge 35-40

the actual size versus projected kite size can vary. Anybody who has owned a wipika knows what i am talking about.

But my 8.5m sonic on SHORT lines easily handles around the 35knts and a few weeks back kitesuffer and i were out in stupid winds gusting to 40. He was on a 9m trix and handling it (just) while i sat and cried on the beach after 30mins.

Yes it can be done, but i kept asking myself why? choppy waves, gusty winds and lots of flying debris? should have just stayed home and drunk beer.
