I got my demo 13M Venom2 today, so I took it straight out for a spin. Hot damn....what an awesome bit of gear

I was out in winds that I would normally have been riding my 8M Best Nemesis in (gusting to 23kts according to the BOM readings), but was still able to hang onto the 13 no problems.

It's an absolute *machine* for boosting....I did some of the highest jumps I've ever done today, complete with nice floaty landings too. Lovely

It's a bit hard to get used to the fact that the kite wants to rise up the window all the time. I've got all the skin missing off the sides of my hands from pushing on the bar all the time to keep the kite down low, but I eventually got used to it. It's certainly nice to have the kite just sit at the zenith though while you mess around with your board/harness/whatever.

The only drawback......I couldn't relaunch it off the water. The one and only time I managed to get it in the drink (totally my fault....basically steered it into the water on a downloop by mistake), I just couldn't manage to get it into a position where it wanted to take off again. Eventually it 'bow-tied' (twisted in the middle), so I tossed it to the safety and swam it in. Obviously there's a technique to this that I need to master

I'm sold though. It felt much nicer and turned faster than my 2004 LEI kites (with the exception of my 8M, but it's on a bigger bar than recommended). It soaked up the gusts and felt much more stable in the air. If you've never had a ride on one, I highly recommend you give it a go!!

You were lucky to get that sort of wind today. Not much down here at Miami. Yeah I like my V2 16M . I hate bowties but I love the way the kite flies and in light winds too. The auto zenith is very helpful.

Good stuff .Relaunch is not that tricky once you have done it a few times (not that it happens that often)anyway the is if LE down pull on one back line till it clamshells .the key is then to pull the tip on top towards you via the front line .The wind will get under the LE and pop it up .You can also give the front lines a good tug via the trim strap then wait for the kite to open up.
Try practicing on next to the shore to get the hang of it .

All the best

hmm not sure what you mean by this ?In my experience with my friends and customers further afield who have needed their kites repaired they have not had an issue with the kite "falling apart".There has been some dissapointment with popped cells when the kite is slammed (which can happen on any kite )but repair is relatively simple and inexpensive .Mr bonk will notice a few repairs on his demo kite .The kite is 2 years old with countless hours and is also our school kite .Yes it is true that the tip spars are crap ,we replace them with fibreglass tent poles avilable at any camping shop for 12 bucks)
I am sure that he and others who have them will confirm that they last very well (which is also one of the reasons they hold their value)and are on the whole free of many of the problems associated with kitesurf kites .I would like to see a crash relief valve (similar to the kites you fly)on future models and am pushing hard for this .The manufacturer also has a good warrntee policy that they honour.

I can vouch for Lachy's comments re the warranty. We only ever hear the word 'Yes' when we call PL with an issue. Usually its only a small issue but replacements/repairs are always dealt with inside a week.
I wish everyone was this cooperative.

I loved my PL's too. Excellent for learning, and hardly ever had to relaunch cause they just dont hit the water unless you fly them there.
The only thing I disliked about them was the launching.
I always felt nervous before walking back and getting the kite in the air, as you get dragged under it.
LEI's are so much easier.

yes launching has been an issue in the past particularly the old std arcs from 5 years ago which had very little depower .
The way they come now with the instructions and a bit of practice mean hot launching should be a a thing of the past.
For any PLK riders out there Bob Dawson put me onto a method that is a real winner .Put sand on the upwind tip (non folded) right at the point where the back lines attch to the kite .As you launch pull plenty of back line tension on the downwind tip to stop the downwind tip from racing forward and a fluffed launch .PLK kites like to rise quickly on launch make sure you keep it down low and dud launches are history.

Like any kite they have their nuances .Reading the instructions /watching the video and A bit of practice or time with dealer/instructor is well worth it

Mr Float,

your suggested launch method is how I've been launching for a couple of years now, & have never had a problem launching. The thing I love about my PL V13 (mark 1 however) is the ease of launching & landing. Forget the pump thing. Zips are all the go...

I followed Lachy's suggestions for launching it (only sand the one point, keep tension on the rear lines etc) and it was fine. The last couple of times I launched it was after the wind had picked right up, but it was still perfectly manageable. As soon as it took off and started flying properly, I just pushed the bar out and it went to the edge of the window with minimum force and sat there waiting.

I didn't get a chance to get to the beach again today, but I'm itching to get out on this thing again ASAP

I got out for another session on it today. Slightly less wind than the first session (averaging 15kts and topping out at 18 - 20kts), but I was still fine on the 13. I'm curious to find out just how much bottom end it's actually got.

I don't want to give it back now

Sorry 4 my late reply I've been away .Yes and particularly the down wind tip .Take mr bonks advice there too.In higher winds things are going to be faster .As withy any kite always make sure in high winds you have plenty of room downwind.
Oh and i noticed the sleeping bag comment slipped in by whoever it was .How true the comment is .Last year ben Deacon and Pat Spiers of the Icebird Antarctic expedition had their lives saved in minus 43 degree conditions when their Venom "sleeping bags " gave themn a touch extra insulation one one extremely cold night in greenland .

Cheers

I used to love my hot launches on my old 1120, I have a V2 13m now and launching so easy, but there is no sand skiing to be had.

I train the local LEIs to catch the kite so I dont need to go to safety on landing, makes it so much easier to drop the kite without having to mess with lines.

Enjoy.
