I don't even know if I could be called a newbie yet - I haven't flown a kite in anger, just been tooling around with my 1m training kite at the moment.

I just wanted to get a general idea of peoples thoughts on parking the kite at 12 o'clock.

From this post

same issues stupid launching/landing practices especially 12 oclock kite parking in the gustiest area - launch land zone

And every other piece of safety information I have read, it seems like hanging around with your kite parked at 12 anywhere but in the water with lots of room downwind is a recipe for disaster, it appears that this is how most of the lofting accidents that have seriously hurt people have occurred.

On the other hand, I seem to constantly see it. I got interested staying at "Kims" between Christmas and New Years - a resort on Toowoon Bay in NSW - in between The Entrance and Shelley Beach.

It seemed like a prime place for kiteboarding, and the Southerly that was beating the crap out of the Syd-Hobart fleet meant great crossshore conditions for it, there were 4 or 5 people out most days.

At one point, I saw a guy walking his kite upwind at least 100 metres, with the kite parked at 12. I also saw repeatedly guys come in and tear up great looking carve gybes metres from the waters edge, possibly just for showing off.

I also noticed an image on Kite Forums (/images/misc/forum-image-missing.gif) with the caption:Nik and Louie walking back upwind during a KiteAntigua class.

From the angle of the strings it looks like the wind is tending onshore, and this is from a course?

So, basically I just want to clarify my understanding of this safety aspect, and basically ask if it is right, what are all these people doing?

Is there a lack of knowledge or care about this sort of thing? I am sure there are heaps of people who get their kite down as soon as possible, launch as close to the water as possible etc, stay out to sea once launched, but from the action I have seen there are plenty who haven't as well.

From reading all the reports on incidents, people who have died recently etc I was almost put off taking kiteboarding up, I guess familiarty breeds comtempt?

Hooray!
Thank god you've got the sense to come here & ask this question. Some of the strange, weird & wonderful things that you see newbies doing sends a chill down my spine.
I think what bolgo means is that when its gusty & you leave your kite at 12 o'clock for too long and not keep an eye on it can...
A: fall out of the sky then rip you off your feet when it relaunches suddenly.
B: pick you up off the ground and take you for a joy ride then drop you down very very hard.

Most of the time its easiest & safest to walk up the beach with the kite as low to the groud as possibe (at the edge of the wind window)
However sometimes objects & or wind direction stop you from doing that so you have to fly the kite around 12 o'clock, IMO Its ok if you depower the kite and gently fly it between 11 o'clock & 1 o'clock.
But i reckon its dangerous to just park the kite at 12 o'clock and not keep it moving, or not watch the kite.
Some people learning are that stubburn they wont take your advice or help (especially with launching/& landing) then ten minutes later your helping them pick their kite out of a tree or worse. It seems there are lots of people starting to learn to kite with the attitude that they can just watch a video then go out & try it. Its just not that easy & you put yourself and all the people nearby in danger. You will learn so much faster with lessons and you'll save your kite from a lot of damage also. So props to you for being smart & getting advice first.

Just my 2 cents worth about parking the kite at twelve. If you launch your kite and park it up there while your getting your head on straight and getting the board etc , kite de-powered, if you get lofted ie 1-2 feet is a good indication that you have the wrong kite up.
It means the lift generated by your kite have over come your body wieght and any other gust comming through that is a few knots greater than the first and your flying.

IMO there is no universal right or wrong - you need to assess your conditions and park the kite in the appropriate position. A few points:

  • lofting occurs when you have NOT assessed your conditions accurately enough and the wind speed over the kite has exceeded the manufacturers specs for your body weight

  • with the exception of turbulence, changes in wind direction are mainly in the horizontal plane ie if your kite is low to one side and the wind swings even a little to that side then you have more chance of luffing your kite

  • You should always minimise the time flying a power kite on or near land ie get out on the water ASAP and drop your kite ASAP when you come in

Hey. My instructor told me to keep the kite at 12o'clock whenever i wanted in in nuetral. Reading about gusts etc it seems that this is not a great idea. Also she told me that to recover in the water when you stack you should move the kite to 12 o'clock and depower it. Is that right?

Hybrid, if you have stacked parking the kite at 12 is not a good idea since you'll move downwind of where you seperated from your board. happy kiting

hey safetyboy, if you want some more reading on factors which contribute to accidents like loftings or draggings, try RickI's accident database...

www.fksa.org/forumdisplay.php?f=1

Whether a particular action is dangerous or not depends on the conditions, the spot and the rider. for example Ian states not to fly on land for any length of time - but many kite boarders only ride on land - in the snow and on landboards. the consequences of a bad fall are amplified but this comes down to knowing what you are doing, taking adequate precautions and accepting personal responsibility for the risks you take (and having decent insurance)

it is also possible to be lofted even if your kite is low, so dont be too confident that this will save you when that freak gust or thermal updraft hits

Ian is bloomin' well right, you need to assess each situation individually. If you're keen look back on kiteforum about 8 months ago there was a mighty debate on the right place to leave it. Sparks were flying, it was an interesting read. Exhausting though, OMG, these people had problems. Mostly seppos doing the arguing. Some were staunch that you should keep it high, some were staunch about low. Each situation is different! Several posts listed theoretical situations and the authors recommendations. There were many. I even wrote some. I'd rewrite them but this is a timed computer and the clock is ticking. Be one with the search features...

had my kite parked at 12 for a while an feel thats easier sometimes so you can have a breather but i never take my eyes of it. Had someone elses gear and i noticed it had no emergency release. Hell of a time to notice after i launched it. I landed it straight away. I weigh 97kg and i was still getting a little lofted. I had a much easier time watching others get bashed, really was a difficult day at len croft park today. Man last time i launch on someone elses gear before checking it. I could have really needed it today

So where should it be? Edge of the window?

safetyboy, re where to park your kite after a stack to recover your board, read my post www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=4179

Re kiting on land, snow, etc - remember that traction kiting on water requires something like twice the force to get moving so the risks of lofting, etc are substantially less - my comments about minimising flying on or near land are in a kite surfing context.
