Have a funny story to tell, and also a warning for all the Brighton-Le-Sands kitesurfers.
Got there yesterday arvo. I didn't go to the first car park as I'm used to, but further up down the shark net. (Important to mention in my story: did so following a conversation with Chronic the day before, who was saying "Em, don't go to the 1st car park, just park at Brighton" and I was like "it's a pain to park and I think it's a clearway" to which he replied "no, it's all sweet, park along the sidewalk, everybody does it!" (THANKS MATE!)). So I parked my car along the sidewalk and went out.
Went to check the dark side, but then realised it wasn't any windier there at all (it was actually weaker), so thought it might be wise to head right back to Brighton: good call, the wind was dropping off and died spot on just as I made it back to the beach!
Craig came in in the same time, and as we saw Dave was rigging his kite, we -of course- blamed him for killing the wind.
That's when he said: "Well, dunno if it's me who killed the wind, but just to let you know, if your car's parked up there, its gone too... They're toeing them"
I turned sort of green... And ran.
There were no car's left... But mine that the guy was nicely loading on his truck!!!
"Hm... Excuse me Sir.. I believe this thing here is mine... Oops..."
3 smiles and 10 thank you so much later, I drove my car somewhere else (with a fine of an unknown amount (anyone knows how much it's going to hurt?)), and was back on the beach right when the wind kicked back in. SWEET AS.
So apologies for anyone who was kiting at Botany yesterday... When the wind died at 4:30pm, it was my fault... It wanted me to be able to drive back home!
But now, take it for known that if you do park along the sidewalk at Brighton (and I know a lot of you do)... You may not find your car at the end of your session...
Actually considered reading the sign (good thinking Em!): it's a clearway from 3pm... (by the way Chronic, is that cool with you if I send you my fine when it gets here???)
Also if you can't park there, where are you supposed to?
Couldn't find a park in any close street, ended up miles away... Any tip?

Hi Em

If you park outside the restaurants and back north towards bay st, tou are right its a clearway and they tow all the cars that park there after 3pm, and fine them too (I think its over $100, bummer)

There are a few car spaces between the end of the restaurant building, and the entry to the new ramp, approx 8-10 spaces, thats it. These are the only ones that are not part of the clearway.

If you can't park in one of the legal spaces, go to the first carpark, and don't leave any valuables visible in your car.

Or just don't kite there, go further south, there are several spots to kite now, between the groins, several beaches are wide enough to self launch.

Cya and

Goodwinds

Steve

Yes, but that's why I thought I'd put a post: I never saw them toeing there either, so I thought people should be warned... I really got lucky hey (first time in my life I thanked the wind for dying!!!)

Yes, lol...Just thought it was so funny we had that conversation the day before: I turned up there that day so we could kite together, and you weren't there and my car nearly got toed... Keeping up the good work, there again...

Well, Steve reckons I'm up for a hundred bucks... That's gonna make a lot of back rub mate!!!
Thanks for the info Steve, the Australian road regulations sometimes have subtilities I don't quite get (plus I obviously can't read, so not helped by nature! ).
Any way it's all good: I was stoked I still had my car and I made it back spot on for the wind so, expensive session, but hey, when one loves... one doesn't count!

my standard rate for back rubs is usually about $50 per hour - so i guess you're up for two hours worth. or you can have 1 hours worth with a bottle of scotch or vodka thrown in. ok how about i pump up your kite through summer any time i see you unless of course my car gets towed then you have to pump up my kite

Chronic you are kidding aren't you? Pumps and rubs is that the best you can do? When are you going to tell them your brother is a tow truck driver.

When i was looking at the place talked about it appears that the yellow clearway line is actually 1 lane off the gutter at that point and as you head further south the clearway line goes back towards the gutter.
If the line is any indication it should be fine to park there. It dosen't disrupt the flow of traffic either, even in peak hour
don't pay the fine.
there are signs that say clearway which makes it hard to argue but i really feel that the yellow clarway line indicates that parking there is ok.

That happenned to George and myself, I saw the tow truck just about to tow my van away and I just got there in the nick of time.

Lucky he was a good guy and let us go, I will now park across the road which is a pain in the ass but its better than getting your car broken into at the first groyne.

Wind is always better at Brighton and there is plenty of room.
Dolls is good but this summer as always Im sure it will get crowded so the more we spread out the better for everyone.

What's the go with break-ins at the "first groyne" car park? I know of one person who's had their 4WD broken into, anyone else? I usually park there but so far no issues.

Apparently its a group of junkies in the area , they are quiet deseperate, its not the first time it has happenned at the first groyne.

CJP nearly caught them breaking into his car, and the police have acknowledged its a big problem in the area.

Well, dunno where you need to park but just ask Chronic, I'm sure he will come up with a great idea (in the middle of the tunnel or on the center lane of the harbour bridge... )
Now, according to what Macca said, seems like Chronic's bill raising by the day, so may be I should start reconsidering his summer duties...
I can't work out what I like best: shall he pump up AND pack up my kite, or pump up my kite in a G-string? Hm... Decision, decision...
The first option is much handier, but the latter is quite appealing.... Might go for that one so the rest of the crew can enjoy Chronic's obligations as much as me!
