G'day
Had a sesh down at pinnaroo this evening and ended up with something nasty up my boardies when water starting. Got a nasty stinging rash on the inside of my thigh.

Before the inevitable STD jokes start flooding in has anyone got any idea what is was likely to have been, i'm thinking some kind of jellyfish?

cheers

probably a sea wasp (small jelly fish, they hurt like crap and itch for ages) look forward to them from now till the end of june, they are everywhere. could also have been a blue bottle, but they aren't all that common. you'd know if it was one of them.
super fantastic winds,
Az

my guess, after several years of avoiding then.....
you will find they are the small clear box like jellies. Not to be mistaken for the east coast box jellies. These are not so deadly, but can give you a nasty sting that will be with you for a few days.
Generaly they make their ugly way to the shore when we have the easterlies as we've had the past week and again they always seem to come in march /april/may. treatment, ice! dont rub them or you will find like other things you rub ...they will swell up.

I'm hearing ya Reb, I had one on my arm the other day. Nissa is right do not rub and ice as soon as possible. They are the blue air sack looking things that wash up on the shore. I tried removing it but the stingers stayed attached to my arm caugth in the hair. It took a while to pick them out. Very tender for days.

Hi Guys,

we are under attack from Blue Bottles at the moment. The little blue bottle jellyfish with the long single tentacle are showing up all over the place at the moment at Pinnaroo. Everyone is getting stung. Trick is to pick the tentacle off carefully as quickly as possible and as others have said, do not rub sand into it or anything. Cold water is what the SLSC guys use but it is not as effective as hot water (as hot as you can stand).

The sting is annoying more than anything, unlike east coast blue bottles which really make a mess of you and hurt for days, these are a mild annoyance. I got one across the chin yesterday whilst body dragging, got it off quick but it still stung, bastard!

Cheers all and wear a long sleeve rashie ..... gees kitepants may come back in vogue if this keeps up.

I don't think a bluebottle or anything could live in that putrid bay water in vic. Is it 10 tonnes of dog poo annually they estimate comes out the stormwater there? Beware the blind mullet

Not mention the many refining/chemincal/other heavy industry that also certainily contribute effluent to the bay.

Altona, a fave of mine, has a large refinery near by and i'm sure the water has some sort of smell to it, then add the smell of the seaweed and sand banks at high tide, it great...

But I've never been bitten by anything

Thats piss funny dan OK?
