I was out today at Kurnell and, while passing a fat arsed P/dancer, he kindly yelled out "Fark Off". I was down wind and well out of his way. What would be the correct response to this behaviour?

Yeah, they tend to get jealous watching us over take them as they plog along. Just ignore the fat ass angry old man.
If he feels frustrated and angry doing what he is doing, then thats his problem, not yours. Blow him a kiss and speed past.

a big fat boost over his mast should suitably wind him up

Hello, Sandy,

I pole and am learning to kite. The Rules Of The Sea are:

Those who are on a Starboard tack, have right of way over those who are on a Port tack.

This means that if your body is following your right arm (your right arm is leading), you have right of way.

If your body is following your left arm, you should give way.

These rules don?t work when there is danger of collision. If this is about to happen, avoid the collision at all costs.

Go here: http://kiteboardingtampabay.com/right-of-way-rules-for-kiteboarding.html and follow Rule 4.

A summary can be found here: www.kiteclubmaui.com/kiteclub_road_rules.htm. Further down the page is a summary for sailing in surf.

Hope this helps.

A better rule is "power gives way to sail". I don't mean "power" as in an engine. I mean "power" as in the ability to exercise control and choice.

In the case of poleys, most of them are either under powered or over powered. Most can't turn or stop when they want to. You can go in much less wind than them. Much more wind than them. You can stop and change direction in an instant. You can ride much further upwind than most of them.

It is your responsibility to use your greater power and control to take care of your weaker cousins on their pole boards. Unfortunately that also means anticipating that some of them are going to charge through the pack at crazy speed and do silly things and you just have to be careful and make up for their bad behaviour.

By the same token, sometimes you are going to do a huge jump and stay up so long and travel so far that your trajectory will take you close to poleys. Or you might crash and your lines will be in the way of their drag strip. You need to be careful to avoid doing that. They need to keep an eye out for you and take evasive action.

... does the aggro continue to the beach or are they all packed up and absent when you get back to shore?

Y'all'd either love or hate Japan. Nobody follows the water rules and nobody cares.... pretty much like their driving.

Never really picked you as the kind of guy who'd blow or kiss a dick, plummet... Each to their own.

Big smiles and enthusiastic waves tend to puzzle people which is always fun.

Sandyscott are you actually interested in knowing why - if so tell us about the preceding 30mins of interactions?

Maybe he is a total farrkk head, I dunno. But your short post does little to put us in the picture.

And all the posts from the really cool crowd about giving him the sh!ts, boosting over, blah blah (usual crap) - good luck when the next council is talking about banning kiting and they have all the threads from here in their justification (its happened)

I give way to everybody...as Gorgo says kiters can outmaneuver most pole dancers, so why not.

If a kiter is less experienced than me I give way to him...that way he wont smash into me and ruin my session.

If a kiter is more experienced than me I make sure I am aware where he /she is and try not to get in the way..

Windman, I understand the starboard rule very well and there was no confusion over who was on the wrong tack. Both on starboard, and I passed him downwind with plenty of clear water between.

And I really don't care why he yelled out, just posted to see who had good responses for this type situation. I'm sure it isn't the first time words have been exchanged between people supposed to be enjoying the water together!!

Cheers all.

let's be honest there are heaps of selfish kite surfers out there with very bad eticate so you can almost understand why they reacyt badly to kites.
However the important thing is that you do not become one of them, impeccable manners and a big smile and wave is the best response.
I used to get heaps of verbal abuse from some old wind surf dude at lancelin but the smile and wave technique wore him down in the end!!!

Fjordfiend, you got it right. Most kiters I pass don't know port from
starboard. They need some education...

I try to be friendly to all the water users as we all are trying to get the stoke....Give everyone plenty of room, a smile and a wave. I get along well with most the poleys at the beach, except my good mate whom I like to buzz as much as possible.

As kitesurfers we must annoy the hell out of them...we have so much more on water performance within our grasp. Maybe that poley fella was just frustrated at you having more fun...

If we are to be honest, the most issues I see are with young, dumb and full of cum male kitesurfers....

From my interactions with poley's at kurnell I've found them to be quite friendly. There's always one though I suppose.

I try to stay at least a line lengths away from them as I've seen how nervous they get when my kite cruises directly over their mast, even if it's 5 - 10m above.

Keep in mind that poleys invented kitesurfing.

We owe a debt of gratitude for all they have done for us.

There are very few true wankers in either sport. 1 in 1000 would scream that for no reason.

I'd like to know what happened 10min earlier

Then again I just green thumbed Mr Slave twice in under 24hrs and have some emotions welling up so I may just be going soft.

The correct response is to smile and give the thumbs up or "hang loose brah" shacka. Don't let anyone meddle with your good vibe.

If you need some practice, try ridding your pushy around town. Drivers will abuse you even if you are courteous, abide by all road rules and are doing all you can to stay out of trouble. Unfortunately this is just how people are in Sydney nowadays when they see others having more fun.

If that doesn't placate the aggressor. Avoid looking at them in the eyes or boosting over them, as you never know if the fat arse owner is on meth or steroids

Like all things in life the minority cast a bad image for the majority. Most wind surfers are pretty chilled, I don't ride one

Unfortunately when the swell turns it on and the winds on it brings plenty of Wind surfers who have very high opinions of themselves.....

I have witnessed plenty of Agro in the surf.......

Life is to short it's best to share and respect

We had a poley that used to frequent our local. He was a true flouro warrior and about 55-60. He drove a banged up old Volvo station wagon with roof racks. He had a habit of standing around at the top of the hill, rigging up in dik stickers and a yellow 'goodies' t shirt.

I always thought of waveslave and if it were him or not. That went on for about 2 years.
