Hi Guys
Just thought I would drop a note to people thinking of kiteing around Leightons at the moment. The SOOOOO Stupid but SOOOOO Wise people of Fremantle Ports as you all probably know are dredging at the moment. Currently there have been reports of people swimming and kiteing and getting a burning sensations in there eyes and throat. So it might be worth kiting else where for the moment. I drove past leightons yesterday morning and it was pretty disgusting to see such a massive broad stretch of water discoloured with the disgusting ploom.
THANKS IDIOTS OF FEMANTLE PORTS to run this STUPID program through summer and the remaining of the warm windy period.

Latest report from Fremantle Port...
16 March 2010
Latest monitoring results
Monitoring reports for the Water Quality Monitoring Program being undertaken in relation to the Fremantle Inner Harbour and channel deepening have been improved to include a simple summary on the front page.
The monitoring is being undertaken for Fremantle Ports by marine and estuarine specialists Oceanica Consulting Pty Ltd.
The latest monitoring report, posted 12/3/10, shows that apart from a small some increases in light attenuation at two offshore locations, all relevant health, amenity, recreational and environmental criteria have been met.
Although changes in light attenuation levels are similar to those occurring in the background at reference sites well beyond the dredging activities, a conservative management response will be adopted with a coral and seagrass survey being scheduled for later this month.

I'm trying to keep an open mind but the water is a shocking, unnatural colour!! I've kited there during the week with no side effects

Went kiting yesterday at Leighton, fell in the drink a couple of times and experienced the burning sensation. Never had that feeling at other locations (or leighton when they weren't dredging).
Not sure what the cause is, but it's definitely something...

fremantle ports/ freo council/ wa government wouldnt even clean up oil that was dumped from ships leaving/waiting to come into harbour last winter, i went out at leighton and noticed that my feet were black and the wax on my board was also black and slimey, i dropped my kite by accident and black blotches everywhere on the canopy. the oil hung around for weeks and they knew about it and did nothing. they simply pretend to care ,,, but are not prepared to clean up....

What pisses me off about this whole thing is that hey these people doing the dredging know science and the weather. Seems odd that we had no problems during the summer when the beaches were full. Now all of a sudden people are experiencing nasties..................WTF. Has it now been decided by these engineers etc. that since there are fewer people using the beach it is ok to go for it, regardless what happens.............short term dollar greed may be ruling here..........at the expense of the poor kn fish....not to mention people.
Haven't been to Leighton as I'm off the water, but I know my student gets sick from drinking the river water.
The lesson is, don't drink the kn water, and if it gives you rashes and burns, then I'de stay out of that too.......sad but true.
The Fremantle Port capacity is being increased at an alarming rate so that they need to build a tunnel under Freo.............have they thought of that? Prob. not, because there is no money for WA as too much of it goes over east..........criminals.
