I noticed the other day that the Core Riot uses these RILEY pulleys on their bridle instead of those RONSTON pulleys most other brands use.

Yesterday I were cleaning out the shed and came accross my first ever kite: The Wipika AirBlast. I noticed that it too has a RILEY pulley attached to each trailing edge line attachment. This kite is a dinosaur from back in the 2000 era with no bridle. I dont know why they needed a pulley there anyway.

These pulleys are about 8 years old, have never been washed or cleaned for their entire life, and havent even been rotated for probably 4 years now, and they were still free spinning.

The roller is made from machined aluminium and the whole pulley itself looks like a much more precision component. The roller is flush with the plastic body and cant get sand between the roller and the body.

Here is a picture below of the pulley from the Core website. The pulley on the Wipika is the same.

I'm thinking of changing the pulleys on my REV to the RILEY pulleys if these dont need cleaning.

Can anyone with a CORE Riot comment on these pulleys? Do they jam sometimes?

I do not have a core, but i sail and i can tell you that the ronstan pullies are ****, the rope can pull down the side, they break, jam, everything and their expensive too. Their CRAP.
The Riley pullies are awesome. Their strong, they dont jam, rope doesn't pull down the side of them, they dont melt from friction like the ronstan ones, their cheaper.
They ROCK

I have sailed for a lot of years and i have used riley and ronstan pulleys on our spinnakers which are under alot of pressure and they also have to spinn under pressure. None of these pulleys have ever failed on me in my sailing life. But all pulleys should be washed after being used and lubed with sillcone spray every now and then to keep in good working order.

The Slingy REV uses the red RONSTAN pulleys and I think that BEST use grey RONSTAN pulleys. Is there any difference between the two pulleys? They look like they're the same?

I dont know whats different in those ronstan pulleys. Might different load ratings or different series that ronstan have. It could also be ball bearing or no ball bearing in the pulleys. if you want to know more or what pulley to use go in and see your local boat shop that stocks sailing pulleys because they can give you all that information. Also there is other brands out there you can use. But i think you should leave whats on there and if they are stuffed replace them with the same pulleys.

I seem to remember that Best came out with Riley pulleys originally.

They had some problems and switched to the Ronstan pulleys.

The metal wheel wore down the nylon casing.

I tested out the riley ones. They seemed to jam far more quickly than the ronstan ones. Seems that once sand does get into them then it really gets stuck there.

The Ronstan kite blocks are all the same irrespective of colour. They retail for under $5 at most ship chandlers. Kite shops are selling them for up to $15.
If you spray the pulley and bridle with McLube Sailkote you'll extend the life of them dramatically.
