Just wondering if anyone has any advice on how to get my pump working swisho again.

Up untill know ive always used kmart pumps with plastic shafts (that break all the time), anyway, just got a North pump (second hand - with an aluminium shaft) that seems to have quite a lot of resistance where the shaft slides through the lid. Also the seal (in the lid) seems to coat the aluminium in some kind of carbon. Is this normal (like a lubricant or something - or is the seal buggared?)

Secondly, the valves seem to be a bit sticky. Takes about 10cm of movement before air comes out?

So yeah, should i just try give it a really good clean, or lube it up with something?

thanks for the tips

maybe you should lash out on a new kite pump?
100mm of movement before anything happens means more work pumping the bitch up

RP7 on the shaft and on the inner tube, works a treat, worth doing every 10 or so kites, especially helpful when pumping up the big kites!!

I would unscrew it, empty all the sand and crap out of it, wash the seals but try and not remove the lubricant off. See if it works any better, if not use some lube and if that doesnt work probably best to lash out on a new pump.

HI Badey,

Unscrew the top, remove the piston and shaft assembly and wash it in a hot soapy water mix. Clean in and around the piston seals thoroughly removing all the sand and crap.

Pop the valves out of the piston and wash them also in hot soapy water. If you can unscrew the handle from the shaft do so and remove the shaft from the pump top and then clean and wash all the seals in the cap.

Reassemble everything once it is all dry and lubricate all the seals and sliding parts with Silicone spray. Same goes for the valve seals. You mayneed to reglue the valves back in with a polyurathane cement.

She'll do you right for a while again.

Can anyone give details of the method of unscrewing the top off the pump that came with my crossbow? I know it is meant to screw off for maintenance but its on there pretty darn tight!

just hit it. Give it a glacing blow with a wrench or something like that. Few hits and she'll be loose as a goose.

...and if that fails to break the pump try Vaseline - or crisco

One more question - any idea how i can calibrate the pressure gauge on the pump? I don't think its reading the pressure right.

Ive done the wash/silicone spray thing and its working smooth as! cheers

Hey badey,

The gauge on the pump is a cheap and nasty $5 job, it is probably not calibrated right when it comes from the factory, and any banging around on the beach or in your car wont make it any better ... or maybe it will...

If it is grossly out, piff it and buy a new one for about 8 bucks.

Cheers and glad the pumps been reborn for you.

Good winds,
