Hey Can anyone tell me the "Nice" area's of brisbane to live ?

I've got a map and have only been there a couple of time, but I dont realy know the good area's to live in...

any help would be appreciated...

I used to live in East Brissy before I moved overseas, but when I move back I will be intending to move closer to the kite surfing spots (yes certified addict). So I'm thinking Sandgate, Brighton in the north and Wellington point, Cleveland in the south. Both have train lines if you intend to work in the CBD. Redcliffe is good also but if you have to work in the city you will have to take into account the choke point which is the Houghton Bridge. A train line was intended for Redcliffe, but I think it has now been shelved as not being cost effective.

PS I actually learnt to kite once I left Oz, and to think I lived in Perth for 7 yrs and never took it up IDIOT... I started learning wind surfing just before I left and it was enough for me to realize I wasn't into having a small lorry to transport my gear.
Just a quick question for those of you who live in and around Brissy/SSC/GC what are the best months for kiting, wind stats wize.

You need to decide or say whether you are going to work in the city every day. If you want to live right near Wello or Brighton it will be nearly an hour commute to work in the city going with the peak hour flow, but great for kiting. If you live in the city or inner suburbs, most of the time you can get to brighton in 25-30 mins or wello in 10 mins more - so long as you avoid peak hour!

Bondo and Andrew are right, but I'd add that if you move near Brighton definitely stay south of the bridge it's a jungle up there! Redcliffe backs onto Deception bay, which is known as one of the north side's ****tiest suburbs, up there with Inala/Darra/Goodna etc on the southside. Brighton or Sandgate itself would be my pic, or there's some nice bits of Taigum which is only 10 mins to Brighton beach.

I'd be working from the airport/eagle farm...

you might be better off up towards redcliffe then. going from the southside to the airport you need to cross the gateway toll bridge ($2.20 each way) and it can get crazy in peak hour. from redcliffe though its plain sailing on the motorway...

Well if you are working at the airport, then there's really no choice - Brighton / Sandgate would be the pick. Now my question to you Andrew - hows the wind in Dubai??? From my research its pretty light, yeah? What size kites are ppl flying there. How often you get kitable wind? Might visit, but CANNOT travel to anywhere void of wind and water.

To answer your question - wind is best in Bris Sept-Nov, not so good June-August. But that way you have 3 months to schedule all of your un-kite-related activities (snowboarding/mtn biking/surfing/house repairs/overseas holidays (to kiting destinations)/etc)that have been untouched from the previous 9 months. Works well.

My interview has been put off till next month, so will have to wait for the verdicted... I hate waiting !

Now I have a few more questions, about schools, house's etc etc...

In the area you all mensioned which are ok, do any of you have or know kids schools in these area which are good, were looking to the future as our oldest is only 3, with the youngest 6 weeks.

In regards to house, I'm having a hard time getting my head around these "queenslander" house's... whats the go with them. It may sound silly but we are holding off signing the contracts with our builders here in Perth for our bigass 4 X 2 home with everything near the beach... You're probably thinking why are we thinking of moving, well it's a career move for at least 3 years, double my pay etc etc etc and bring "best" to QLD... any more comments would be really appreciated

Hi All on this post - A newbie here in a few ways.
Well I was searching for places to move to in Brisbane as I am moving back to Oz after living in Ireland for a skint. I am from the northern suburbs in Sydney but due to crazy house prices and to much traffic the Wife and I are bringing the kids - 2 years and 5 months to QLD.
We want to live on the sunshine coast but the work in IT there is well it aint there. House peices are reasonable but then I ust searched on Redcliffe. Looks like a not so hard commute to Brisbane and it is buy the water and wind.
Bit of history there - Well watersking & wakeboarding since a kid - Snowboarding and my snapped wrist due to rocky conditions in Persiher has pulled the reigns on that sport - Windsurfing for a few years and dying to get on a kite. I have been lacking watersports since moving to Europe, I went cable sking in a waterpark out of London - I had to pick of the leeches of myself once I was finished - plus cable is nothing like on the back of a boat.

I am looking at real estate web sites and not sure about the area's in Redcliffe - I can drive to the beach not a wory but the commute the Brisbane I don't want to be a killer. What's this about a toll? What are the options for driving to Brisbane from the diffrent area's in Redcliffe? what is a standard peak and non-peak times for CBD? What public transport is available if I don't drive in (not sure if I get a car spot).
Love to hear from ya and to go kiting with you when I get my now fat lazy ass back to Oz later this year.

If your choices are open - definately perth.
Redcliffe will be at least and 45min - 1hour in peak by car to the cbd.
It is also still pretty feral around there - try some nice midway suburbs like wavell heights, chermside etc. you can get a nice place for around the 350 mark.

Sydney sucks

I've lived in Perth,Sydney and Brisbane and I rate Brisbane as the best place to live. Sydney is great if you are a multi millionare with money to burn and can afford to live on the water, otherwise its a rat race.
Perth has got reliable wind in summer and is a very clean city with affordable living. The problem with perth is its isolation and insulation from the rest of Australia. Perth is quite layed back, but crime does tend to be a bit higher (compared to Brisbane) for some unknown reason.
What I love about Bribane is its layed back lifestyle and convience to the rest of Australia/ New Zealand, especially with all the low cost airlines flying now days.
But I would avoid Redcliff if you are going to be working in the CBD, as has previously been explained.
My aim is to spend Summers in Perth to take advantage of the wind and then the rest of the year in Brissy or somewhere else on the east coast (Apart from Sydney).

I live on the Gold Coast and have a friend who lives here and works at Brissie airport. He drives and it takes about 45 minutes (at 4AM or whatever). I am new to kiting but have windsurfed here for years and it's pretty good. North end of coast has a popular spot on the broadwater at Labrador and Narrowneck is great too but i only go there on a south easter with small swell (for now).

I also work in IT and luckily snagged a job with a global company with headquarters in Southport (central gold coast on the water). Brisbane seems pretty good for IT jobs and a couple of my colleagues live up there (Manly area) and commute down to the Goldie for work. They either kite here to show me how it's done or up at wello or vic point.

If i end up workin in bris i reckon i'll either stay here near the M1 and commute up there or move to Manly area or maybe closer in like greenslopes. My girlfriend used to commute up and tried driving for a while but after a few 2 hour disaster drives to work she changed to the train.

I too have lived in Brisbane, Sydney and Perth. Perth is number one for me. Unlike Andrew, I think the isolation is a bonus. The beaches are better and the wind in the on season is better. It's a shorter season, but you'd probably get more days on the water per year in Perth. And the kite scene there is way more advanced. There is a bit more crime but it's negligible. Especially compared to Johannesburg where I live now - world crime capital.

I've only had the chance to kite Brisbane at Wellington Point and Brighton Beach, and they are both kak. Wello is a bugger of a place to launch and land (at high tide anyway, which is the only time I've been there), and Brighton is skanky muddy with jellyfish everywhere.
