Just a note for anyone thinking of kiting at Redcliffe (SE QLD)

There have been numerous sightings of a rather large shark cruising the reefs between North Queens and Queens Beach Redcliffe and at the Reef next to Scarborough Beach. We suspect it may be a Tiger shark. The dorsal fin is at least 30cm tall and it has made a pass at some of the kiters. It or they seem to hang around the same spot where it has been sighted by all kinds of beachgoers. It isn't the first time any of the local kiters have seen sharks in the area but this one is much bigger and hasn't acted so friendly! I dont know much about sharks but are the Tigers territorial?

If anyone sees anything can ya let me know.

Mike

Tigers are very agressive and very curious but I would be more worried about the sharks you don't see. I bet Brighton/Sangate will have the first attack as that place is crawling with Bull sharks. I know of one shark showing aggressive behavour to a kiter a few years ago and my brother saw a very large bull shark smashing across the sand banks in water way to shallow for it straight out from the beach.
I hit a small bull shark and I bet the thing has a memory that hates kiters.
We had a trawler operator once tell us on the beach that after heavy rain large sharks come in close to get rid of parasites in the fresh water. Then whent on to say how we were nuts even thinking of getting in the water around Brighton.
From what I know you should not swim in a place that
-has dirty water
-is at a river mouth
-has large number of fish
Brighton has all of the above.

Lets just keep an eye out everywhere in Brisbane for sharks.

A generally good idea

Thanks for a heads up though. Always good to hear about any sightings.

Thanks mate.
Liz.

Which state and where is this beach Brighton as we kite alot at Brighton Beach Botany Bay and know the Bay is full of Bull Sharks , but have never seen them yet and dont want to.

I guess its just a matter of time before something happens as commercial fishing has been banned so that means more fish which means more sharks.

The ocean is their home. In fact they r not just at queens or brighton, they r everywhere. Only a few years ago some guy got nibbled at wello at waist deep water! There is no need to fear. If you are meant to go, you are meant to go. In the interim, live life to its fullest!

Hi Danza the Brighton that they're talking about is North of Brisbane Queensland. It's adjacent to the Houghton Highway Bridge.

Regarding Brighton yes agree you are in the same tank as sharks and Im sure there are bullsharks around the area but the bigger concern is probably going to be Stingrays, Jellyfish, sharp objects and MOST OF ALL OTHER KITERS IN THE AREA! You are more likely to sustain serious injuries from kiting at Brighton or being hit by someone else. Which leads me onto communication (thanks Elizabeth). If you see someone that you haven't seen before that looks like they dont know what they are doing or is a possible hazard....TELL others around you so they are aware!

Always good to be aware but spose it doesnt really stop people from heading out. Couple of week ago here in townsville "apparently" two crocs were spotted near where we kite, in saying this upon getting to the beach 20 kites where out and ppl everywhere along the beach no one was phased. and im always being told we are mad when we head out towards maggie due to the sharks that inhabit the area no ones come to harm so all is good i spose.

As im sure more people on the site share the same interests of spearfishing as me, and full well know that shark attacks even on divers is rare. I've even been in the water protecting a mate from 5 bullsharks while he subdued a kingfish that was in his arms. The fact that sharks of any type have been seen in the water at these locations does not surprise me at all. We're probably kiting over them the whole time, in redcliffe here we cant see in the dirty water anyway, noones been bit yet, i wouldnt worry too much.

Just on that theory Leader........
Have you or anyone ever heard of anyone being eaten by a bullock, or cow? Or a pig, or sat on by a chicken?
Just reassessing whether I should be cutting back on pork, beef and eggs?

I haven't heard of a kiter being attacked but up until recently I hadn't heard of a definite attack on a windsurfer either. I used to think once up on the board and moving nothing would attack us. Then along came this attack at Gnaraloo on a windsurfer that was apparently moving along at a reasonable speed. See the poleboarding forum for details:

You should just stop doing that to them!!!.
But if you have not been eaten by them no it does not count.

So has anyone been snapped at by a snapper, or flattened by a flathead, or tuned by a tuna?

Enquiring minds need to know?

Haven't had many reports of anything the past few days probably because there has been no wind and no one has been kiting. Quite a few rays spotted in the area though not that its any issue. The water has this ice coffee brown algae or something in the water....it stinks! Anyone in SE QLD getting this bloom? It seems to grow after days of no rain hot weather and no wind.

I spotetd a smallish shark on Saturday afternoon pit the back at Brighton Q. We have a pic of another one taken on Saturday just past donovans reef also at Brighton Q.

The info about the biggy around the peninsula is getting around as I was talking to a guy the pther day who said a few of his friends have been doing some shark fishing around the place and have only pulled up a few small 1-1.5m ones so far, mainly bullsharks and one tiger. They are having some nice beer battered flake to kick of the cricket season / ashes this week !

Be aware at all times and don't stand around in waist deep murky water for extended periods and especially at dusk.

January this year at Amity Point North Straddie a 21 year old girl was attacked by a number of small bull sharks in waist deep water during the very late afternoon. There was a dog swimming around in the shallow parts of the area and the water was not very clear. She didnt survive this attack unfortunately. I can't remember the exact details but I think it was blood loss because it took over 2 hours to get her to proper medical facilities.

In many shark attack articles there are precautions you can take. Obviously kiting at dusk, with a dog in the murky water during bull shark breeding season etc isn't the best time to kite.
I am sure some of the local fisherman have extensive knowledge of fish breeding and feeding patterns and can offer some great advice??

I was speaking to my father who lives at redcliffe and has fished the area for 30+ years. he reckons the sharks come in at this time of year to breed but more noticable down towards woody point. I haven't ever heard of a shark attack at the local beaches and they are used quite a lot this time of year by swimmers. any of the other beaches good for kiting at redcliffe?

When I was learning to kite I thought Greenleader, Charlie Brown, Paul B, Mabo and Muddy didn't like me. The reason?

They took me out to the sand bank just to the west of Amity for one of my first sessions. Breeze was from the north and we launched from the south side of the bank. I quickly ran out of beach and talent and was soon drifting south through shark alley, anchored trawlers everywhere. Mabo looked really pissed when he finally arrived about 45 minutes later in the tinny to rescue me because he had to cut short his session.

It was quite a session for the rest, I'll never forget it as it was the first time I'd seen some decent air time. Browny and Pauly were ripping up a lagoon that had formed in the bank and boosting over my head and out to the open water over about 20 feet of sand!

That was 5 years ago and I'm still not sure if they like me but they let me come into their shop as long as I buy something.

The last 2 weeks some of the kiters have encountered schools of baitfish jumping up into legs and lap when kiting close to shore. It feels like heavy rain but coming from the water hitting you.

I haven't seen any sharks for a pretty long time but offshore about 1-2km's you can see large flocks of seagulls coming down to feed on stuff.

Alot of kiters totally agree Woody Point end definately shark feeding ground and up at Scarborough end....shark sighting garunteed!

This time of year there generally is more shark activity close to the beaches on the east coast for a few reasons. Easter rain on north coast of NSW opens the rivers and the mullet start to run along with bait fish. (good time to spear/catch jewfish) Anzac day usually is the start of mullet season. (bait & mullet netting has now been banned in many rivers and the recently gazetted cape byron marine sanctuary.) Its a bigger food chain at the moment, try not to be part of it.

Was that during the making of one of your Porn movies?? I don't think inter-species curiosity is legal in Aus... being rammed by a pig must be interesting??
