Was out having a bash at Leigtons in front of the surf club last night.

Not bad, bit gusty and on and off close to shore.
A guy came out at about 5.30 with a red kite.(Not sure of the brand but it had 2 big white circle shapes on it) When I went in as the sun was going down he'd pissed his kite about 300m off the beach.

He struggled for about 30minutes while we were packing up and he was gradually being blown toward Cott. It was gettign dark and really cold.

The some clubbies went out to him on their surf skis, they were out training. And then they launched the Duckie to rescue him properly.

Nice work to the Leightons SC crew. Had a word to one of the guys and it happenns a fair bit he said, a couple of times a week.

Apparantly the guy who got into trouble was German. His girl was on the beach and she was looking pretty worried. Sunset is not a good time to be floating around trying to relaunch and/or self rescue.

It's changed my opinion of clubbies though - I love you guys! Nice work.

Yeah I saw that 2! Lucky for him the local clubbies were around to help out. Was getting dark real quick!!

Just a gentle reminder tho Ben, all board riding at Leighton proper is off limits from 1 Oct to 31 March. Read the signs as you walk down the access path. About 300-400m north just before the railway overpass is where everything is cool

Cheers Airhead,

I had heard there was something going on at Leightons, but as none of the clubbies had said anything to me, I haven't been too worried.

Will stick to the over pass area from now on.

It's gonna be too sketchy there once summer kicks in anyway. I hate kiting around families and kids, way too much potential for disaster.

Thanks for the tip.

I've noticed a few newbs down at Leighton lately. Hope all the learning is going well! Does anybody know where you can get a map showing what areas of Perth are banned to sail craft like ours over the summer?

heya Brooksy how you been? Its Kat from GG, not to sure where you can get a map, but that would be a great idea! That way we would know where we can kite without having to worry about busting a bad rep. for the sport!
Look 4ward to seeing everyone out on the water, its going to be a crazy summer, i can feel it!

Problem is that the bans on surf craft, etc are local council by-laws and there is no single coordinating body. Even Surf Life Saving WA probably won't be able to tell you because operations are local club based.

If you know of useful info like this why not email it to [email protected] so they include it in their proposed site guides.

Speaking of those proposed site guides, the page says they are coming in Sept. Well do they mean 2006?

Actually Alex Bell has been putting in a lot of work to bring these to fruition. Should be on the waksa.org.au website very shortly.

Hey Kat! Hopefully see you on the water this weekend. Headin to Pengo's to check out Full Tilt's demo day on Sat, when the wind gets in and then be around Sunday, either Leighton or Woodies. Seeing the thieves are back into at Leighton, Woodies is looking good!
Bring on the wind... looks like a sweet season coming on!!!! Hopefully I'll see you AND Ros and Ash(did the french boys inspire her???) on the water!

Didn't see you out on Sunday, Kat?? Was on the water 11 til 4. Killer session, am absolutely buggered! Had 1.5 hours on west facing beach at Woodies to myself, then 1 hour on the north with only 1 other kiter... SWEET!
Back down to Woodies this arvo I think! Did you managed to see any sharkies at Cott/Leighton?
