I called the coastguard to rescue a kiter at Woodies who had been down for ages and was drifting off into the beyond.

Soon after a kiter told me that they sometimes get angry about people rescuing them cos of their lines getting caught up?
And that they would rather just wait out the drift until the eventually hit land.

Was a bit confused after that - if it was me and i was drifting like shark dinner i'd be VERY happy to be picked up.

Don't want to cause angst or waste coastguards precious time and funds and am more used to windsurfers who can paddle in on board if all goes wrong. Is there a general rule that kitebods have about when to rescue?

Katy, if it were me, I'd love to get recued.

I'd much rather spend 45 minutes untangling a ball of spaghetti with an ice cold beer than spend 45mins drifting with the sharks, and then have to deal with getting back to your car from where ever you finally wash up.

What did the Caost Guard say? Did they go get the guy?

Yeah, I got to go out in the boat too which was coolio!
Actually one guy had got into trouble and was floating off. Then another went to help him and he got into trouble too! The first guy managed to paddle back to the beach, whilst the other one who had tried to help got stuck out at sea D'Oh!

When we picked him up, he was pretty chilly and wiped out but ok. The coastguard said that the rescue was right as it was getting dark and the guy could have been in serious trouble.

Fortunately it was all good

yeah, send the boat out anyway, just to be safe. The kiter can always say, 'thanks for the offer but im ok to get back to shore'

although kiters can recue each other a lot easier than windsurfers...
quite often u just rely on ur mates to help u out, if they look like in trouble tho dont hesitate to call for help..

no no dun-king, the coast guard were totally cool, it was the kiter that i was warned would be angry (he wasn't tho). The coastguard are legends.

Thanks for the answers!

PS, Space Monkey, I don't know if my last reply posted or not as something weird happened to my comp, but i wanted to say that I thought your sticker post was comedy and wasn't offended at all!

So, you get a free ride one th coast guard boat too.

That is pretty cool, and gives me a great idea for a Chrsitmas party.

"Look fellas, there's actually no one to rescue, but I just happen to have a few cartons and friends with me and Rotto is lovely this time of year."

hi guys, i had to get rescued in the broadwater recently! i was told to go to a place called shearwater(good for begginers)but pretty soon i found myself adrift in the seaway calling for help! eventually i was picked up by the coastguard they were fine about it, actually all i could think about was pashing off the chick on the boat- she was spunktacular.... no i just land jump. good winds Bob

Heres just my input, the person who called the coast guard should also get a guy to ride out and tell the dude in trouble to wind his lines on the bar, cause there comming :D, shouuld make coastguard happy !
