I have recently noticed a new trend of people becoming paranoid about getting sand on there kites when they pack them away.

I saw a guy at Lancelin taking his kite up into the vegetation covered dunes to roll it up, with obvious disregard to the vegetation and the dunes. I have also seen the same thing happen at Pinaroo point which is my local spot.

I think that it should be strongly discouraged to walk in the sand dunes under any circumstances, especially for such a lame reason as to pack up a kite.

Does anyone else agree or is the coastal sand dune vegetaion destined to be destroyed by these ignorant new breed of beach users ?

sand doesnt stick to a dry kite. You roll it up on the beach and put it in your bag, sand stays on the beach where it belongs. Its not hard. I will laugh long and hard when I see someone put a tear in their kite from putting it on bushes.

because its summer and it drys out. Its not really dead just real dry and crunchy. I think they got more to worry about with people driving through woodies on dirt bikes and atv's.

Rolling your kite in the dunes is not necessary, but as for dune vegetation is it necessary? I dont see the dunes at Lancelin to Wedge being covered in vegetation to stop erosion. The movement of sand along beaches and over dunes is natural it helps form banks along our beaches. No wonder our metropolitan beach breaks rarely have good waves anymore. Without the movement of sand there will be no beach. All that will be left will be man made vegetation. Thank god for reef breaks.

Oh, poor you, bring on the scratchy violins! Your attitude's got to be the Omega Point of egocentricity! *You* hate sand on your kite? Which gives you the personal right to stomp around in fragile dune heathland?

I agree with Paul, this should be strongly discouraged. I've noticed this behaviour also at Brighton/Scarbs, kiters stomping over the dunes instead of using the footpaths. Baaaad vibe...

Getting sandy is part of the sport. Don't like it, take up lawn bowls and leave what's left of our precious environment intact.

is the loss of vegetation going to effect your kiting? probably not, but sand will annoy you and effect your enjoyment.......sand on the car seats just means more work later.

It *will* affect your kiting, since the rest of the community will have kiters banned due to you being an environmental lout. If the community doesn't ban us first, still bad - you may well end up with no beach to launch from. It only takes the destruction of a small patch of vegetation for the dunes to de-stabilise. Come the next winter storms half the beach is washed/blown away. Doh...

Have to admit, I've been packing up on the woodies dune vegetation and thinking it won't be long until it's the woodies dirt bowl cos alot of crew do it.

It is kinda stoopid and super anal.

Ok. I'll stop. I like plants. Especially green ones. Especially dried green ones in zip lock bags...

sorry, I digress. Keep off the grass.

I agree with Paulo.

The movement of sand is a naturally occurring phenomenon and a necessary dynamic in the ecological process.

It's true that there is natural sand movement in coastal heathland, wandering dunes etc. - what is not in nature's scheme of things is for kiters (humans) to cause dune erosion

Nature does not anticipate those humans who'll stop at nothing to further their own interest i.e. avoiding sand on their car seats, taking a lazy shortcut, imagining themselves to be 'cool, unconventional, swim-against-the-stream surfie rebels' who delude themselves about reality with dissociative rationalisation...

PS Next time you drive up to Lano stop by in the small crayfishing settlement of Seabird (North of Guilderton) and ask the locals why the beach is encroaching on their houses, houses which were once behind the dunes. Only a few cool kids dunesurfing and holiday residents cutting straight down the beach from their backyards instead of using designated paths.

Kids dunesurfing and holiday residents walking down the beach caused the beach to encroach on residents houses. GET A GRIP OF YOURSELF BO!!

I'll heed your well-meant advice, Paulo. Thanks...

Meanwhile I'd put it to you that you need get a grip on the mechanics of coastal heathland erosion. From its seemingly innocent triggers/causes (trampling of vegetation), to the unpleasant end result, namely the encroachment of the ocean on the shoreline. Without that we couldn't even begin to have a debate.

Trampling on man layed vegetation causes the encroachment of the ocean on our shorelines. Yeah ok Bo. lol. You could so win this debate!!!!

You guys arguing against this debate are unbelievably silly and immature. The fact that the council goes to so much trouble and expense to bulid the fencing and walkways to protect the dunes speaks for itself. Keep of the damm things !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As for anyone worried about sand - Get a grip of yourselves you sissies !

Kids should not be dune surfing, nor should locals be making paths through the dunes. We should keep to the defined paths and pack your kites up on the beach or the man made grassed areas if available. I don't care if you ruin the grass- Someone will water it and it will grow back.

As for the movement of sand etc etc. It is a natural process so lets let it behave naturally. Don't encourage or discourage it - LEAVE IT ALONE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
