Having a ball today out at Dog beach booooooosting!!!!(hero) - stacked a jump and was dragged...(noob)

What resulted was the side of one strap getting pulled of my board. The two stainless screws failed.

The problem I'm facing now is the bolts joining the straps to the twin tip are not stainless and have rusted.....I cant undo the bolts joining one to the other....

has anyone had this problem or recommend a solution?

I have tried wd40, they are lock tight!

Some awesome rep want to give me a cheep board? Your company logo would look great 30 foot in the air.

In order of frustration:

Penetrene/PBBlaster and let it soak overnight
use the correct size screwdriver applying loads of force downwards
Try tightening it slightly as well as loosening it
Judicious taps with a hammer on the end of the screwdriver as you try to undo it
Dremel the head so that you can get a flat screwdriver into it
More Penetrene
Dremel the head off so you can get the strap off
Apply heat to the thread
Vice grips on the thread, closely followed by...
Snap the rest of the thread off flush with the bolt
Swear loudly
Dremel the rest of the thread flat so you can then...
Drill a small hole through the bolt
Ezy-out
Snap the ezy-out
Cut the kn nut out altogether and glass a new one in

Hi Underoath,

An easier fix is to simply drill out the old bolt with a 4.5mm drill bit. Make sure you drill it dead centre and keep the drill perpendicular to the board. Be careful and take your time. You want to drill out the bolt body to the diameter of the valleys (narrowest width between the thread pitch in the screw.

Once you drill it out, get yourself an M6 intermediate tap and slowly, using penetrene, tap out the rusty thread which will be stuck in the helicoil insert. The insert should be fine as it is hardened steel and wont cut from the tap, the soft steel screw will give and align the tap with the thread and you can then clean the insert with a finishing or bottoming tap to complete the job.

Go slow and advance a quarter turn, then back the tap out 1/2 a turn before advancing another 1/4 turn <repeat>

I had the same problem when trying to change my straps - I cut the straps away, then applied WD40 to the screw, then turned the board upside down and clamped the screw in a bench vice. Crank it up nice and hard, then spin the board around the screw. Worked for me and I didn't tear the inserts.

just drill through the board and stick a bolt in, takes 10 seconds

See your mate with a welder. Place an 8 mm nut on top of the srew head, 1 spot weld. Apply spanner. Done.

This is your best bet......
