G'day guys
Im a newbi at this game and am wondering what are the essential safety gear?. I know that a QR on the harness is a must but what about hook knifes and boyancy vests?

What are your opinions on teh nessesity (sp) of hook knifes and boyancy vests and any other safety gear i should look into. Cheers

P.S i will avoid a leg rope

welcome, well make sure you have a quick release chicken loop and a safety leash (from harness to either outside line or 5th line)id say no personally to boyancy vests, and glad to hear your saying no to a board leash,
goodluck, its an addiction!

Most of my mates wear Gath helmets, and I'm getting one too.

Booties can be handy, depending on where you kite. One of my mates wears an impact vest, like a wake board stykle one. See the odd guy with them on. I have been winded from crashes, it's porobably worth considering I guess.

In the end it's down to how much gear you wanna cart around and have to put on when you're frothign to get out there. Helmest always make sense I reckon. Unconscious and hooked in would not be a good thing.

i wouldn't take a knife out, your just as likely to stab yourself after a massive crash

Fighting off a shark?

Cutting the lines after someone ditches their kite into yours and now you are being dragged by 16mx 2= 32m of raw power!

Having an equaliser in the argument with the fisherman that set up RIGHT were you are kiting, and thinks you are scaring the fish.

Piercing the leading edge bladder of the idiot that turned up and...................................

A hook knife is probably not a bad idea, especially in waves where there's more chance of getting wrapped in your lines.

They have a protected blade that will only cut a line or rope.

knives have one purpose cutting lines off of cray pots that have 20m flowing behind or blow across a narrow channel, put in the surf break or belonging to hardie (just joking on the last one)
