Just advising other kiters that local residents of Sandon Point are proposing to have kite surfing banned from the beach all the way from Sandon to Bulli. If you are coming down to kite here, be careful of swimmers and stay 500m from the flags. Walking up and down the beach with your kite in the air is also not advised. There are people down there taking photos of us and taking them into local council. Just letting you know what's happening because this is the best beach for kiting on the east coast and we don't want to lose it because it's become popular all of a sudden.

NSWKBA and AKSA can help, as councils etc like to hear that there is a state and national organisation that promotes safety and has regular contact with kiters.

NSWKBA is working with Surf Live Saving Australia on kiter rescue techniques so we already have a good relationship with them.

Contact me if you would like some help, the Newcastle Club has really worked well to help the situation up there by getting the local kiters together and self regulating on busy beaches.

I'm not a kiter but I have a general view of the rights of sports participants, but not over- riding the interests and safety, peaceful enjoyment etc of others. I quite enjoy watching the skills of kiters, and like that it's not a motorised watercraft!
That said, I was on patrol recently at Sandon Point and we were just going out to warn a guy to get his required distance away from others when he moved on.
Now, this guy's skills were obviously high, and no doubt he perceived himself not to be a danger to others
BUT
1) it's only a small slip
2) the less skilled emulate him etc

if you are going to change the post to "stay right away"
then please explain.

i was out there the other day, got a few friendly waves from the clubbies, no problems.

Still no-one wants to put their hand up to organise a get together. It is not my home break but i will come along with my two cents worth. The NSWKBA has even offered to help.

Lets do something about it before it is too late ??

We are having a meeting next week end. We all spoke together Monday. One guy has e-mailed aska. We have mostly all joined nswaksa and stay away from the flags is what i mean. So things are being done. I wanted people to reread this if planning to kite today as a voluntary ban was talk about until the flags are put down. Good for people who know about but not for those who dont. Heaps of blue bottles there as well.

Mate we have been staying away from the beach. Because more or less a north east wind is no go within 60m each side of the flags and 500 out to sea. Also you can't be any where near the waves if there is people closer than 30m or already on them and 30m away from people at all times. We had a meeting last sunday and all agreed that you must be and have a AKSA tag and membership up to date to kite there. WE have formed a club but it in it's early stages two member's spoke to the local life guard and to my knowledge no one is to kite there until the flags go down. You can't body drag or walk with your kite in the air up and down this beach when people are around.

Yes Macca looks like we will pick Corrimal as the likely location as we need a beach with good facilities, plenty of room and god dam its my local beach, hey why not.
