So having come from woodie and seen another guys car window smashed (on his birthday too!!) I think its time (or re-try if there has been previous efforts) to get the council to install 3 or more security camera's (one for each parking bay). I'd def be happy to even give money to the council to see it occur. (the possible ~$200 for a new car window and costs to replace other stuff would see a donation of ~<$20 from everyone that enjoys woodies well spent). All they need is one like the surf cam's. a camera on a pole, secured in a box with live feed to a remote location so if a dumb f**k tried to destroy the camera, his pic would already be taken and stored off location for replacement costs!! Its simple and cost effective-would reduce police hours on this problem and the technology is def there!!

Couldn't agree more, i'll pitch in...But in relation to the above, hate to be negative but the police haven't really been putting any effort into this problem at all.

Its not so bad in summer when the car parks are busy, but be really careful now its not so busy.

Or we could chip in some coin and get a few boys from tonga to lay in wait and then practice a few dozen rugby tackles on dem punks.
This would be a better course of action as A: tongan rugby will improve and
B: highly unlikely they will ever go back there just in case.-after their bones heal
C: police=slap on wrist

The word of warning about crime I will give is that if you let things progressively get worse, its a lot harder to reverse the trend than halt it in its tracks. The more successful the thieves are, the more brazen they become. Its also a matter of time before they become more violent. My suggestion here would be to stop it asap, no matter how you do it.

Very valid point Saffer. Definately something to think about. I still think an alarm with teeth in the back of my ute would do a bloody good job of it though.

I feel for you guys, Woodies is a great spot but it's plus points in terms of being out of the way but accessible at the same time are its weakness as well -it's tricky to police, short of paying for someone to patrol the carparks all day. Maybe the boat ramp area (I assume it has fees) will end up factoring this into their costs.

CCTV is good but all it will lead to are guys covering their faces and concealing their numberplates, that's if they don't smash the equipment.

I think the best bet is to avoid parking there in the first place, get a lift or take a taxi so you don't have to park at all. That said it is out of the way so taxis will cost a lot!

The Woodies guys are going to have to organise, maybe lockers at the sailing club or something is another option.

Hey maybe even get some signs made up saying

"Security cameras fitted in this area"

on the turnoff to the point to spook the punks....

and or stickers for Woodman point users saying something like

"Woodman point camera fitted".....(Ideas on slogan welcome)

Also have seen rent-a-cop in the area over summer - but he was 150kg and driving a getz i think - all the punks need to do is walk away and they will never be caught.

I’m happy to contribute towards any such scheme, I certainly frequent the Woodies glass recycling car parks on a regular basis but don’t think cameras will solve the problem.

I have been the victim of push bike theft twice with CCTV cameras present. On both occasions the police and then the rail authority are not interested. “The resources required to follow up these crimes is not available”. If someone was murdered it would be a different story…

we have a family business that is subject to constant thieving like you wouldnt believe, they just walk in, grab it...and walk out. In one case several thousand in cash and the guy looked right into the camera. The answer from the police was, "really, what would you like us to do about it, the money is probably already gone, these little pricks are nearly impossible to find, and when we catch them, judges let them go" however since one thief was dusted up in the bin room by a frustrated manager, we did see a distinct decrease in activity from that particular group (highly not recommended, but it works a treat)

Kite gear is different to coin in that its harder to move but i still dont think a camera would do an awfull lot, but would do something and thats a start. I actually havent been to woodies but maybe a camera to get license plates of all cars that enter?

hey guys, i live in south aus, and though we have no problems at kite beach here i have dealt with thieves at my home before. The first time i caught someone the police were called and he got off with a fine, so the second time a baseball bat was employed by myself and i have had no problems since. I am quite willing to come across and help you guys out with the same tactics :)

Are they smashing windows or forcing locks over there ?

$200 aftermarket window tint may put them off because they realise, through thier own trial and error, that the window wont smash properly, if at all, because of the tint film, delaying their hit and run timing and increasing (in their paranoid drug fuqd brains) their chance of being caught. Which will unfortunatley for someone else, move them on to another car ! When you see broken glass in the carpark it has come from a car without aftermarket window tint.

Cameras wont help unless they are covert, but the deed is done anyway and the problem arises that they usually have stolen plates or are driving stolen cars on their little crime sprees.

Very frustrating situation and has been happening forever, got me 20 years ago at a beach only 2k from home. I dont know woodies area but I suspect as is over here that they randomly target the secluded carparks which makes policing very very challenging. The thieves know the odds are on their side.

Reality on a Crime Scale of 1-10, theft from motor car is about 1, fuqn annoying but there are bigger issues confronting society.

If you cant secure valuables, leave them at home, dont give the theives the opportunity to steal. Yeah I know we shouldnt have too, blah blah blah, but that's the reality.

The copterdr has it sorted, there is an actual carsafe at Bunnings hardware for about $30, I had it in my last car, and will reinstall in current, smallish but fits a wallet and phone, a bit of peace of mind.

Lastly, If you see a shifty looking prick/s in the carpark, a lot of the time they are sitting their watching you, waiting, dont turn a blind eye, ring the cops, use your phone cam to discreetly take a pic or two, dont confront them, if they drive off update the cops with another phone call cause they're probably just heading to next carpark, you might save someone some grief.

Surfer 62, My car was tinted. Tints or no tints if they want your stuff they will take it. My break in happened in front of a witness who recorded their number plates but he didnt have a phone on him at the time.....didnt matter anyway the van they were in was stolen. I had no idea you could buy a car safe....I thought I was just being clever

Yep doesnt seem to matter if you have after market tint or not, instead of it shattering they just kick the window in.

Even if you have a car safe, you'd be best to leave your windows down as it doesnt seem to matter if they can see anything valuable or not.

Can something be done to protect the rate payers from the low life who break in to cars and steal stuff.

A bin to put these people in to would be good too. All kidding aside, having some rubbish bins in the parking lots makes sense to many who use the area.
