Hi all

We want to go on a kitesurfing holiday to the Cook Islands (Rarotonga - Muri Beach and/or Aitutaki) we have looked into the location and it looks great! There is a good chance winds of
12-30 knots during the month of August (SE Trade winds) - it is also pretty cheap :)

What we would like to do is get a few people who are also interested to come along, and share the experience. We hope to be able to hire a support boat for the time and possibly get some instruction if people are interested.

Dates
1 Week 05 Aug - 13 Aug

Costs
Flights
Approx $1000 from Melbourne incl taxes

Accom
This will depend on how many people we get interested, we would be looking at getting a house with multiple bedrooms/beds, the price will depend on what house is available that fits everyone in :)
A estimate is between $170 and $300 each for 1 week at Muri beach

Let me know if you think this is a good idea and you would like to come along - there will be no added cost by us we just think it will be more fun with a group

As of this evening, any form of holiday is looking unlikey for me as I may have to go back to the UK for a bit in June so there goes a lazy $3K

Paul, I hope the trip is not due to bad news.

Azza, Bondo it would be great if you could make it It should be a lot cheaper than an organised one.

I think there could be some crew from WA intersted too

Hi Snowman, I'd be interested in the following week if you get any interest from anyone who cant make the 05Aug-13 aug or would like to stay an extra week. I get back from the Coco's on the 09 aug and then to Fiji on the 19 Aug, it would be great to fill in the gap. Air New Zealand have a flight from Cook Islands that would land me in Fiji as the rest of the Fiji crew is landing. Anyhow, it's just a thought.

Bondo: If your interested in puting a crew togeather for Japan around Jan, drop us a line, I'd be up for it

I got an email today and looks like the Semi Organised Holiday could get cheaper. How does 4769 flights and accomodation sound. I have not checked out the 'conditions', but those of you who can go might want to check it out. Sounds pretty tempting to me. Wonder if I can convince my wife that she can sit on the beach for a week.

Unfortunatly by october the winter blues are over and the wind is back

Here are soem links on the Cook Islands
http://www.pacific-travel-guides.com/cook-islands/

Here is info I got from www.wunderground.com
Historical Kitable days 14 - 30 knots base on high not average
1-15 July 2005 7 2004 10 2003 2
15-31 Jul 2005 52004 5 2003 10
1-15 Aug 2005 62004 9 2003 7
15-30 Aug 2005 92004 7 2003 5

'you can generally expect anything from 15 - 25kts each day. Muri Lagoon is "the" spot for kite and windsurfing in raro- it's a huge lagoon (about 2+ meters in depth) with a few islands thrown in there and as you can see on maps its very exposed to the South East trade winds.'

Hope this help some of you to decide

For those having trouble decoding Snowman's breakdown, here it is in a slightly better format:

............2005...2004...2003...2002...2001...2000...1999
0-9 knots....3.............1.............1..............
10-14 knots..3......4......4......2......3......3......1
15-18 knots..2......4......3......6......6......7......9
19-24 knots..4......2......3......6......4......2......3
25-30 knots..2......4......3......1....................1

Thanks nebbian

It all looked fine when I typed it in the editor, guess it got a little hard to read after that...

I can get up and going around 10-12 knots so for me it looks like kiting pretty much every day. For those that need more than 15knots it looks like 8+ days out of 14 and that is using the worst figures (last year)

Not sure about surf

But here is a speel from a Muri beach website

'Muri Beach sits on a picturesque location on the east coast of Rarotonga. Muri's attraction is the tranquil sandy bottom lagoon which is excellent for swimming, its lovely sweeping beach and four uninhabited islets within the lagoon. This is the place to go for water activities (sailing, kayaking, wind-surfing and even kite-surfing) and there's a beach bar and restaurant at the Sailing Club to sip beers and watch people. The only drawback (apart from lack of seclusion) is the wind tends to pick up in the afternoon and, being on the east side of the island, the sun disappears late afternoon.

It's easy to wade (or kayak) across to the uninhabited islets at both low and high tide and spend a day relaxing on the quiet beach and looking back towards the mountains of Rarotonga. Snorkelling in the lagoon is good only for marine life - there's no coral here and the lagoon is only waist deep in most places'

I might be keen to tag along to your rag tag bunch of misfits if you are looking at going around the first weekend of August. Was looking at Fiji but Cook islands look like a better option. I also have a couple of lads from NZ who are up to the challange?

Hi the_Cro

Did you get my email? We are looking at booking our flights this weekend (hopefully) Are you guys interested in just doing Muri Beach or do you want ot spend some time in aituaki too? Aituaki is about an hours flight away and looks beautiful but I am not sure on the price of airfares I think they could be a couple of hundred each way.

Give me a call.
