Shark scare closes Hillarys Boat Harbour

3rd August 2007, 12:30 WST

Hillarys Boat Harbour and its surrounding beaches will remain closed over the weekend after several sightings of a four-metre great white shark yesterday.

Fisheries officers spotted the shark near the mouth of the harbour just before 4.30pm yesterday, after reports it had been attracted by the decaying whale carcass which had washed up on the beach.

Poor weather conditions had delayed the removal of the 15-tonne whale but authorities finally retrieved the carcass about midday yesterday.

Fisheries are continuing to patrol the area today and have not reported any official sightings of the shark since yesterday.

Fisheries metropolitan regional manager Tony Cappelluti warned water users to be aware of the possibility of sharks in the area.

“The whale carcass had been there since the beginning of the week and because of that and the possibility of remnant residue, it is likely to provide an attractant to sharks at present,” he said.

“One of the key tips in our shark safety information is to avoid areas where animal waste is in the water.”

Monkey, its best people like us try and hold it in then or at least do in in the carpark instead of the water.
