Dont shorten them under 20m.
Its too hard to jump white water and the kite is gutless.

Over 25m and it takes too long to fly across the wind window for waves.

If your kite manufacturer is on to it they will supply a floating sleeve so you can chop em. Sew on this.

I've hand sewn them before and they've held up so far

There's not much pressure on the stitching anyway because the tension's taken on the knot.

Not showing any sign of letting go but not as pretty as a sail maker would do. It'd probably cost you all of $5 to get them done too

Approach your local kite school as they may have short lines with their teaching kites you may be able to borrow or hire and try it yourself. We use 15m on our 9m kites when teaching at times but it doesnt give you as much power. But it's easier to control, turns faster and save walking another 10m! 20m lines are good in surf.

Flysurfer have these things called easy line connectors (elc) where you can quickly change the length of the flying lines. For exmaple on my kites the overall line length is 21m made up of a 12m, 6m and 3m sections. With 1 elc per line you can quickly remove sections to get the desired length.
