Hi,
Does anyone know in Perth someone who can professionally shorten flying lines? Niel in Hold the Line is unfortunately unwell, and not going to work for an uncertain time, so I need an alternative...

Unfortunately they do only kite repair, not shortening the lines. It needs that sleeve to saw up the loop...

How short do you need them? You could always buy training lines, some brands offer them for the schools for teaching.

25m lines shortening to 22m. Neil did this for me a number of times. Jesper is away, and his workshop does not have the sleeves to saw up the loop properly, so by the time it was done it may well be the end of season. I was hoping that there was someone to this work now, as it otherwise may take about half an hour to do.

If you don't mind me asking, whats the difference? does the 12% difference in length actually help the kite turn significantly faster?

You can splice the lines without having to sew the loop. If you google "zacher knot" it will show you.
When I used to kite I was forever making my own line lengths, once you've done it a couple of times your speed improves

Robbo is correct, I have used the Zacher knot for many years. One of the best knots I know. I have used it on flying lings then added a pig tail by a larks-head knot in 3 mm dyneema....
One of the good things with the Zacher knot is that can be easily undone and adjusted to suit line stretch & shrink should the need arise, all you need to do is leave a little tail on the knot.

Thanks Robbo1111 and Crakas, I will try that knot. If it works, it saves a lot of hassle, and gives the possibility to experiment.
Flyingcab, there were discussions on line length some long time ago when I was more frequent visitor, and fair bit of experiments. That 12% does make a big difference in flying the kite. Try to fly the kite with 30% shorter, or 30% longer lines, and you will know that 12%-15% means compromise. A 15m line makes the kite nearly impossible to handle, while on 30m lines may keep falling off the sky in gusty winds. Even a few meters shorter line will make your kite a different breed... Opinions, of course, differ... but that's mine : -)
