So I went in to see a surgeon today and my choices are beginning of December (3rd) or middle of Jan (14th).

It's basically a fight between get er doon or be able to kite (though this depends on my ability to swim and wind, it would also be cruising around on my surfboard with no jumping) either way I won't be able to kite again till August if I'm lucky.

Anyone that's been there have any helpfull thoughts?

If you get it done in Jan, will you be able to kite up until then? But getting it done earlier means it will be more recovered for next season.
It's a big choice. I'd go for Jan if you can kite up until then.

i would go for december. better to have the extra time at the other end than just cruise around and not be able to ride hard.

what are you getting done? i had my left shoulder reconstructed early in october and am due to get the right one done on jan 14th.

PM me if you want some gory details or recovery info

gday neil, hows it going? i was taking it very easy when you were up here and only riding in the surf. i got the op done on the 7th oct and i was unable to raise either arm above 90 degrees by then.
waveriding was not much stress for the shoulders; ride down the line and there is no pressure, even unhooked, but i couldn't load up with a twintip and i couldn't swim in if it went pear shaped.

get it done sooner. People will look after you over the festive season and you wont have to miss out on sessions because you are too hung over...

Nah, in all seriousness, if you need the surgery, dont delay, you will recover that bit sooner and maybe enjoy next season that bit more through the extra months strength you will have built up.

If it's key-hole surgery you'd be amazed at how quick the recovery can be.

1 acromioplasty down (R) one to go (L) for me.. eventually (outside kiting season)

Best of luck matee

I see! Say g'day to Andy and Nat for me.

PS discovered we have a mutual aquaintence. I regularly kite with Ray Swartz (spelling?) down at dutchies. Used to windsurf with him too back in the 80's

I tore the ligiment off the bone, docs going to try and do key hole but will go open if needed. What I'm fighting is instability, I dislocated this shoulder 5 years ago and finished the job this time. There's a couple cool videos around that I watched online at work, the Doc made a video of his key hole surgery pretty neat but made me cringe I'll go through the history tomorrow.

Doing the left one at the moment right one needs to get done as well but I'll give myself a season between.

Stamp: If you've got hints and tips I'm all ears. So happy I've got a PSP for the overnight in the hospital, not that I'm going to be lucid!

I had mine rebuilt a few years back, sounds pretty similar, torn all the tendons, then busted all the cartlidge off the socket, shoulder wouldnt stay in the socket and would dislocate basically with a sneeze! I had the open cut, from top of the shoulder to the start of my underarm, I was riding in 10 weeks! Make sure your physio is a sports dude, its massive to get the physio right, you need to be working on it as soon as the ops over, dont wait a week or anything, within 2 weeks you should nearly have fully mobility but it'll feel like its tight as. and it'll hurt like youve never felt hurt before, but its the only way.

Physio's set, they do a couple of the Manly Marlins, Tongan Rugby, Aus Net Ball and a couple other teams. Good with knees and shoulders which seem to be my ailments. They also have pillaties and yoga run in house.

just go to benji marshall's specialist. he has done his shoulders reconstructed 4 times, and done his knee as well. there goes his pay packet.
the surgeon MUST be hell experienced.

Think of this ->

You could delay the surgery, go out riding with a bung shoulder, have a minor stack and make it way worse than it is now. I would get it over with and hit the physio as often as you can physically take it and or afford, whichever comes first...

Hey Canuk

Welcome to my world. Had an ACL recon (knee) 7 weeks ago. Just another 7 and half months before I can kite again.
Maybe we can sit around, swop war stories, drink beer and feel sorry for ourselves. Just don't let them turn you into the local kite bitch after your op!!!

If you get away with keyhole surgery recovery is super quick if you are fit. I had a shoulder reconstruction plus a clavicle excision done at the end of April, paddleboarding after 4 weeks, gym weight work after 6, kiting on a surfboard at 8 -10weeks, twin tip at 12 weeks and at 20 weeks stronger than before surgery. My experience was full movement within a week(lots of pain), and an unbelievable amount of physio, 3-4 times a week for 4 months. Wish I had had the op earlier but waited for the end of season, great result hope you have the same.

here is my tip when you come out of op and in recovery room tell them your in heaps of pain and they will give you a morphien drip over night. most fun you will have in hospital. I had my knee done in winter worked a treat for me.

First time I did the shoulder was in the US and they druged me up to the gills to the point they'd given me all the morphine they legal could and then some sort of pill as well (damned if I know what it was at that point). Didn't feel a thing when they put it back in, pretty neet to watch some 100kg "male orderly" hang off your wrist as the doc pushed the arm back in place.

Having said that I almost threw up in the middle of the Golden Gate bridge on the way home that night. Talk about a blur of lights

I don't know if they are being used everywhere but I had a 'pain blocker' bubble/drip thingamy for the 1st 48hrs after.

It is a little almost tennis ball sized baloon with local pain blocker inside. The juice is delivered by a thin tube direct to the area (into the joint) and worked so well for me I only had a couple of panadiene forte for the 1st couple of days.

When it is finished and collapsed you just gently remove it yourself. Top stuff.

Personally the morph and the opeoid (sp?) painkillers they sent me home with made me barf big-time (think the excorcist) so the pain blocker was extra handy.

Bad news about your shoulder CC but I think you are doing the right thing getting it done now.
I am also sitting on the sidelines at the moment with a fractured fibula but after reading about some of these other injuries 6 weeks out doesn't sound quite so bad.

Better to do it early I think. The wind over summer will get you motivated to work harder on strengthening it up. I know I tore my MCL over winter and because of lack of wind I never got the knee to 100% and ended up wasting winter and part of summer.

Do you how did this happened?
Is it because of unhook riding?
Or even with the hooked riding it might be happening to us?

Cheers

Sailing injury, well not even. I was carring a jib for a 52 footer down the dock to go for a practice sail on my shoulder and it slipped off backwards and I didn't let go in time. Wasn't a pleasant feeling or a good way to start the day!
