Hi there - there seem to be a few keen consumers advocates on here - I have got a question for anyone who might know.

I am about to book a 4 night long weekend in a Mirvac hotel.

On the website, they advertise an "Advance rate", which is much cheaper than the usual rate, but you must pay in full up front, and there are no cancellations or changes.

It is advertised on their room page at a certain price, but when you go through to the reservation page to actually book the room, it informs you that choosing to pay with a credit card will incur a 1.5% surcharge.

That is fine for staying at the Hotel and paying at the end, as you can choose to settle your room with Cheque, Cash, EFTPOS etc, but with the Advance room payment must be upfront.

I called the reservation line to ask how I could pay for the room in another way (direct debit, cheque etc) but they told me that the only way to pay was with a credit card.

I think that if there is no choice but to pay by credit card, then the rate advertised is not available as there is no option to pay that rate - you have to pay the advertised rate x 1.015.

We are only talking about a few dollars here, but I resent it on principle - they are advertising a rate that I can't actually access.

The supervisor of the reservations line isn't available until tomorrow, so I am just trying to decide whether to call up and be a pain in the arse, or just to take it.

I checked the fair trading and ACCC sites, and their definitions are a bit wishy washy in what I can find.

Anyone got any firm info on whether they should be providing another payment option?

Your spot on in regards to the Fair trading acts, though open to much mis-interpretation, it is obviously leaving you very unclear of a path of certainty you should follow.. at your descretion - I have amalgamated the following to maximize your satifaction on your brief holiday

Do not take no for an answer from the hotel manager, ring and book direct - he "will" reduce the total amount to save you those few dollars ... with this, add a few rounds worth of dosh that you would have ordinarily pissed up agaist a wall and get yourself a 'ho' Youll instantly learn to forget about the little things that just dont matter... which is the whole piont of going on HOLIDAY

Guaranteed Happy ending

Cheers

If you use a Debit card (not eftpos) usually you don't incur the 1.5% fee. This is pretty standard in Europe and will flow onto here as Debit cards become more common. If you are flush most of the time its an awesome alternative to having a Credit card that you pay an annual fee on.

At the end of the day, do you want to martyr your holiday on the principle of having to pay an extra 1.5% on top of what is probably an awesome room deal?

Its like the guys who refuse to pay the $2 toll on a new road designed to save you time and petrol and then end up spending the money they "saved" on the extra petrol consumption that the older slower route takes...

Hey Clayton,

Hear is your answer from someone who works in a hotel in Perth managing rooms div.

Advance Rate - These are usualy heavely discounted rates (usualy up to 50% of stabdard rates) and to GNT paymet for these rooms they are non cancelation (like a cheep rate with an airline - if you pay a full fair you can change / amend as much as you like because all the admin fairs are included in a full price) Make sure you read the terms and conditions on the booking firstly. Don't bother with the fair trading and ACCC sites, as they will just state to read the tearms and conditions.

Payment - Best way is to check sites like WOTIF or RATESTOGO for other discoutned rates and then call the Hotel you wish to stay at. Most hotel will honor the rate on these websites if you ask nicely so they do not have to pay a commission to the web sites. Most hotels require Credit card details tp hold the booking and before you give them these details, just let them know you wish to pay by EFTPOS on arrivial for the room and they SHOULD NOT take any payment on your Credit Card. Remember to ask first....

1.5% surcharge - THis is a stanard practice in some hotels and usualy in heavly discounted rates, and if you doint pay it ythen the hotel wears this cost. dont blame the hotels for this charge - its a bank thing - Blame the banks......[}:)]

Also - if your going with your partner - mention its is you wedding anniversary or a birthday (Little white lie) and most propertys may place a bottle of champange in your room on arrivial or do something special for you - dont push too much thou.

Fell free to PM me if you have any other questions or want any other ideas how to get away with

Out of season things p**&^ me off more than usual:

Yesterday I went to buy car parts – advertised on the net for $38.50, when I got there the guy charged $44.00 and said I was too late for the “May” special even though it wasn’t advertised as such, then he nailed me GST on top of that and then a 2% credit card charge on top of that!! I bought 4 of them, but in hindsight should have walked out. The company is Korean Car Parts (WA)

Another one that gets my goat is Foxtel – in the windy season I don’t watch much, but I have noticed they seem to up the amount of ads every few months so they think you won’t notice them slipping an extra one in – on some of their programmes they have as many ads as you get on 10!!.
They also seem to be reducing the number of free movies and slowly increasing the ones you have to pay for.
I wish there was someone else to go to.

If you get the same rate through WOTIF or RATESTOGO book through them...they dont(or didnt last time i booked) charge the 1.5% credit card fee.

Credit card surcharges really P*ss me off too. I understand it for some of the smaller companies as the volume that they process it not much so the bank hit them with heavy %s.

But the larger companies have no excuse, their cost will not be 1.5%. Wonder how many millions get processed through Mirvac each week.

I dont pretend to know anything about the hotel world but its not localised to this industry.

As mentioned before - Call the property direct and see if they will honer as WOTIF and RATESTO GO are both prepaid and have admin fees......MMM sneeky.... so it will just be like a surcharge......Sorry to over rule you sk1nner.....

can see where you're coming from. could use a debit card as suggested.

I'd be scared leaving my toothbrush out or ordering food if I complained too much!

Just to clarify - I don't have a major problem with them charging 1.5% (it ****s me a little, but if you don't like it don't pay with a credit card) - what I was unhappy with is charging 1.5% to pay by credit card, but ONLY allowing payment by credit card. That isn't a charge to pay by credit card anymore - it is just a 1.5% premium because you can't avoid it.

As I mentioned, I called the reservation line last night and they told me I couldn't pay any other way.

Today, I called the Reservations manager, and I didn't even have to really push the point - she just gave me the banking details and I shot the money straight across - all good.

Thanks to everyone who threw in serious advice - especially Ashkiter for the inside running on the working of the hotel side, and SaveTheWhales for advising that I hire a prostitue on my holiday - that will mean my days will be awesome kiting, my nights will be awesome banging some Port Douglas hooker, and my wife will enjoy the nights as much as the days!

MyUserNam - I hear you barking - I was a bit worried about that too - but I was very polite and easy going with the person I spoke to, no harsh words - hopefully no cleaning the toilet bowl with my toothbrush.

Now I just need some nice tradwinds in Port Douglas in July!
