Hey I'm hoping to go to Germany at the end of the year (November to February) and am interested to know
-Where the good snowkite spots are?
-What sort of wind range to expect?
-Boards which are used (just a snowboard?)?
-Good websites like Seabreeze for Germany?
-Any friends who may live over there who snowkite?
Cheers for any info you can give me.

Hey hey! I would love to go snowkiting with you, but unfortunately I'm in Australia at that time
But no worries there's heaps of good spots, the best I know is the Reschensee, it's pretty famous for good winds and snow, so I (55kg) can use my 9 most of the times.
The kitesurfing forum that might help you is www.oase.com and there is a special Forum "Süd" thats for the south of Germany, so maybe post your question there!

Hope this helps you!

If you are in Germany you may as well travel down to Austria and get the A1 snow experience. Distances in Europe are small compared to Aus and public transport is dynamite. St Anton has a railway station and the chairlifts go up from it. St Anton is powder heaven!!!!!!! Not to mention, the trans-alpine railway line sceney is spectacular. There are plenty of resorts in the Arlberg to choose from.

You can use a normal snowboard for snowkiting, although some brands are bringing out dedicated boards, the main difference being there is no difference in the board shape from nose to tail. Normal snowboards are a little bit directional.

Sounds like you haven't been to the snow much. I reckon just go to Austria, learn to snowboard and maybe do some kiting when/if you get a chance. The best snowkiting is when you use the kite to access the off piste and as a substitute for a chairlift. You need a solid snowboard background to even consider this. Given you have a kitesurf background, you should be doing blues in 2 or 3 days. The concepts of board control are similar, except you are a lot more centred on your board, I would even say over your leading leg more, except when it comes to ungroomed powder, which has a different set of rules.

I love kiteboarding, but snowboarding in fresh pow on a steep black is the best experience. Imagine riding a wave that puts hardly any drag on your board and makes you feel weightless, whilst being almost silent.

The apres-ski (after ski) scene is awesome, people party on all night, its like Oktoberfest in the snow. People then go out clubbing until 3am and then hit the slopes all day the next day.

I am so jealous of you I want to steal your plane ticket.

Hi Jessie!

I am living in Stuttgart (south-west of Germany). An Aussie friend just forwarded your post to me. Well, Snowkiting .. that how learned kiting : ) what do you wanna know?

Spots?
Depends where you go to. There are a lot of good spots in Germany, some with stable, some with more gusty winds.. some with a lot of snow, some with less .... did you already plan where you´ll stay exactly.
I mostly go snowkiting either on the "Schwaebische Alb" (swabian alb) or in the black forest, both are regions the the SW-Germany. The Schwaebische Alb does not always have so much snow in winter, but if it does, it is pretty much ok.
There are a lot more spots in different regions so, also some lakes where you get pretty good snowkiting on the froozen lake in winter. If you have time to travel it is worth going there for some days.

Kite size?
Kiters around 55-65kg mostly use their 13-15m tube kites, or a 13m foil kite. Here you see a lot of foils, bout 50-60%. In stronger winds probably an 10m, but then the winds ofter get pretty gusty. I use my 8m and 13m foil about 50/50 with a weight of about 68kg.

Board:
Every snowboard you can find, even the old rusty ones. It only has to be a twintip, no race boards! ; )

Well, if you pass stuttgart let me know..
If you wanna have more info, is there a way to contact you, probably email?

Cheers´n I wanna go back to WA for Kitestock´2010..!
Who dontes a ticket!? : )

Cheers to all my aussie mates,
Micha

Hi Jessie
Just got back from Europe myself, and talked to some guys about snow kiting, they were from north east Bavaria and said that you want to be in a high altitude area with big flat areas, they do trips into the Czech republic north of Prag for snow kiting at about 1000m with snowboards and one guy was telling me he uses normal skis.

Send me a mail if you want to get in contact through a shop in Berlin.

Hey guys-thanks for all the info-I didn't expect this much.
Tho think I really need to scratch up my German for some of those web sites!! (I seriously think that seabreeze is way easier to follow).
My family is all German (im born ozzy tho) so been there twice before. I have family Nagel, Muenchen (Munich), Bonn, Bad Neuenahr, Duesseldorf, Hohenpeissenberg and Ammersee... (basically that is all the places I have free accomodation.)
(So any of those places any good-the trend seems to be south germany tho)
I'm 60kg, and own a 5m, 7m and 10m (bow,bow, C)(tho the 10m is "literally" a pain in the neck in gusts).
From the info given from u it seems I should spoil myself with a new 9m?? (tho I have no experience on foil kites-is that the way to go for the snow?)
Skysurfer-offering free accom?? haha
Jessie

If you have the choice then Ammersee is the place to be!
And yes, South Germany is better for snowkiting for the simple reason that there is more snow at least on the mountains.
I'm sure youll find people that take you to the spots very quickly in the ammersee area!
And dont worry if there'S no wind on the windguru or windfinder, these are thermal winds...

And if theres no wind and snow at all, take your stuff and go to the Reschensee...

Greetz from Bavaria(=

Yep, seems like Ganja knows what she´s talking bout : ), Greetz to Bavaria!
I just returned from there. Hey Ganja, do you know if one of the lakes "Neusiedlersee", "Attersee" and "Mondsee" in good for Snowkiting?

Probably one last thing about kite sizes: on lakes, or generally inlands, the wind´s weaker than at the sea, take the biggest kites you can find with you (10-17) : )

I know that the conditions for snowkiting are pretty good in Thalgau (Mondsee), I saw snowkiters the last time I've been there...
But I haven't been snowkiting there, "only" snowboarding which I can only recommend in the Skiammade!

Well I just realised that my first stop in Australia, which is the Mornington Peninsula is even colder than it is in Germany this time of the year, maybe i should bring my snowboard
