Do you really need to be a insane rider to get sponsored? what is it that sponsors really look for in a rider before accepting their applications?

Ive basically been riding since september 06, i can do powered unhooked tricks, like sbends f16, f16 toeside surface passes, downloops and all that stuff. Im working on pull up passes at the moment, only tried them on 4 sessions now and during the times i was testing kites, most of the time kites were too big for conditions but i got a few wher i caught the bar and i can atleast touch the bar most times, just need a consistent amount of sessions and i will have it down soon. I've decided that from next session on im going to work on my blind riding and front to blinds since i always neglect trying those, i can ride blind alright for the amount of times iv tried it but im sure il learn fronts to blind pretty quick. My goal for this season is to land either a back mobe or a slim chance.

I know quite a bit about kites and how they work etc, n im good at talking to people on the beach and helping them tune and set up kites. The reason i am looking for a sponsor is that im at school and i kinda need to upgrade frequently as my gear wears down, bin using a 9m and 13m waroo since september and the 9 has well gone past its prime.. i was thinking about applying with naish or maybe slingy but i like naish more because they got sweeter boards.

Charl, your best bet is not to go directly to the big companys (imagine how many people they get every day doing that!) but try to strike a deal with a local kite shop. Usually local shops have a few sponsored riders using their brand new gear in return for exposure and 1-on-1 advertising with other riders. They usually compete in the odd event too.

Good luck mate!

You do not need to be an insane rider to become a Team Rider. Once you are on board, it should give you access to gear at discounted price, free team gear and access to a training program to help you improve as a rider. It will then open doors down the road when you become better and start winning comps. Get free gear, sponsorships and assistance to entry fees at comps, travel allowance and expenses, and ultimately onto financial reward packages. We also train suitable team riders to become Assistant Instructors/Instructors so to help them perhaps consider a career path to make money on what they enjoy doing. In the interim you might even score yourself a part-time job at your local shop/school.

Other than tangible rewards, you will also be riding/training with other team riders which makes kiting a lot more fun let alone the assistance and support you'll get from your fellow team members. Downwinders, adventures, roadtrips, kiting at different locations with your team will further improve your riding ability as you share your own experiences and tricks with each other. It also eliminates safety issues as you will look out for each other.

What the shops/brands are after is what you can do for them in return. Are you a positive ambassador for their business/brand, can you help them promote, help their names get better exposure/publicity, so they generate more business in the end. Remember the businesses are there to make money and to benefit financially from your involvement in their sponsorship program.

Hope the info helps. Contact your local shop is the best place to start. We are about to start recruiting again for the Brisbane region for the coming season. Anyone in Brisbane interested please contact us for an application pack. Good luck Charl and happy kiting! Contact Jason at Fulltilt in WA, I am sure he will be interested in helping you.

I thought it was SOS Surf that worked with Naish?

you missed the boat, couple years ago you could get sponsorship with those tricks and a good name but now they are too common.

doubt SOS would give you kites as they have the top riders already and have had them since before I kited. - never hurts to ask though.

yup they sure do.. slingshot's misfit aint that gr8, its sweet for flat water n all n pretty sweet as a core wakestyle board but aint gr8 for freestyle big air stuff. the thorn from naish is more versatile. that lunacy looks good, i saw it in England, it looks really agressive but i dont think itl handle chop at all!

besides most people apply at slingy and slingys are already very common near my locations etc so its harder to get sponsorship.

I,ve just finished dinner and gotten some leave from the missus.

Now i reckon you kids should get yourselves rich parents or get a job and stop pissing your red bull and vodkas against the wall. because no-one is going to help you for an extended period of time to achieve greatness in this or any other sport.
Sponsorship=Discount.

Hey Charl,

A sponsor doesn't necessarily want the best rider although that can help. A sponsor is looking for a good ambassador for their product. Generally someone who is having the most fun on the water, who rides with a smile on their face, who is out there all the time making the sport look like fun to the average Joe.

A good sponsored rider is super approachable and willing to give over their time to help others. It also helps if you are well spoken and can write reasonably well. It helps if you can put together legible and coherent stories and gear reviews for forums like this one and also kite magazines.

A good team rider is always keen to assist the rest of the team and the designers with input if and when possible. It is a must to know what a good board is and what a good kite is and what precisely you feel needs to change to make it better for upcoming prototypes.

On top of all this, it is a general must that you attend competitions and represent the sponsor in a professional manner, even if you don't win. The tricks you are doing are not cutting edge enough to win a spono on riding ability alone. To be noticed for your riding you need to lead the pack, not follow it!

Easy eh? Good luck with it ;-)

Thanks Darren, had a word with Jason today over the phone and he sounded reasonably interested, I told him I was keen to get naish sales up because i really like their gear etc. He also said I should try Ocean Rodeo and Liquid Force because he wants those brands to be pushed aswell. Organising a day to go test the gear and meet eachother etc.

And I am going to start competing in local comps this season and train harder then I was doing earlier in the year. I love learning new things about gear, like how width flex etc affects board performance, how aspect ratios change kite speed n power etc. always keen to learn new things about the sport and don't mind sharing my knowledge.

I havn't been into kiting for that long so I wasn't expecting people to jump at me with offers and stuff so I won't be devostated if I don't get any form of sponsorship.

Oh and Darren I got my Skippers ticket so I need to show you that and when are you guys opening up again?

Hey Charl,

Good on ya mate, the team and I'll be back on the beach in September as soon as the Doctor comes calling.

A big new year ahead with all new gear and hopefully a nice windy season. Yaaaaa!

See you when the wind blows.

Good winds,

Hey Charl if your interested in getting sponsored best way is to ride with some of the better riders or where people from shops ride. If they see you pushing it and progressing fast you got a good chance.

CAPITAL LETTERS! Sentences start with them. Sentences should also have a verb, which I didn't put in my first one here, but lets get the basics before we get into the finer details. I see a few full stops above, but FFS!
