Hi,
I'm planning a trip in december-january in Western Australia and was wondering how far north I could go and still get good wind?
I am trying to know if the Shark Bay area is still windy in that time of the year? and which are the good spots in that area?
Also, is it still windy in Coral bay, and Exmouth in January...?
cheers,

Windiest time of the year is Dec-Jan in Shark Bay and Exmouth. Also the hottest and not very many tourists at that time so you'll have beaches and water fairly much to yourselves. No whale sharks at that time but turtles lay eggs on beaches then and snorkelling is always fantastic. Been up there in January the last 2 years - beautiful region. You'll absolutely love it there. You'll find great flat water and wave spots all along the Ningaloo reef.

Denham is spot on flat, shallow, turquoise water, spacious beach easy to land and launch. We were there in Feb, the wind seemed to back off mid day then fill back in later in the afternoon, sometimes not filling in until around sunset and blowing a hooley all night long.

Briefly kited at Coral Bay but the beach we launched from was small and awkward plus when you see the shadow of those critters underwater puts you in paranoid mode.

that time of the year = crazy wind

Shark bay; denham is good, nanga bay is good at low tide, DONT KITE LITTLE LAGOON! (i did but apparently that was stupid due to the high stone fish numbers or something insignificant like that)

Exmouth is great, search it in other threads, basically Graveyards = learning waves (though maybe not in dec jan) and sandy bay = top notch flats, dont kite turquoise bay, looks good but a snorkel beach, not gonna make any friends kiting there.

Coral bay, go there to meet backpackers, have fun and spend lots of money on food, dont bother with the kites, the rangers or locals or tourists will have a go at you for kiting anywhere other that the water ski area (dodgy) or Mauds landing

bring a 4wd and explore, look at google earth and you will see lots of great little areas.

january can be a bit hit and miss for wind in exmouth, it can really crank but there can also be weeks of nothing. it is more reliable a bit furhter south at that time of year.
and definitely no waves in january unless its cyclone swell

No swell in Exmouth Dec-Jan, unless there is a cyclone...
Winds are O.K. then - but the season hasn't even started so anything is possible..

Some great camp sites in Cape Range National Park right next to Sandy Bay if you are into lots of flat water kite action. (Cheap camp fees)
A few other travellers around then too, so there is always someone to have a chat with.
- Need to be self sufficent and require plently of shade..but good fun..
