I was just wondering how the guy with the sonic went with getting his kite down from the palm tree yesterday, a few of us spent about an hour trying to dislodge it with no success. I had to leave to go to a bbq so I didn't see what happened after that? I know he was heading off to get a 20 foot ladder. BTW the guy was extremely lucky after slamming into the palm at full speed, luckily hitting it flat vertically instead of head first horizontally.

Hope it all worked out ok.

I saw the sonic up in the tree when I drove down, only to be greeted with 9m LF kite flying across the road just as I was parking with a couple of people in hot pursuit. The summer of kite carnage has begun.

I also noticed instructors teaching people beach flying (hooked in) without helmets. Is this the norm?

i dont think the guy who got his kite caught in the palm tree should be confused with the usual kooks causing antics around St Kilda, i witnessed the whole thing, he was a good kiter, its just that sometimes, as those of us who do it regularly appreciate, self landing in Catani gardens can be hazardous, and yesterdays gusty conditions were no acception.

I would have thought that yesterday at St Kilda there would have been enough kiters about to get a catch when landing and self landing wouldn't have been required.

Self landind - Catani Gardens?

Isnt that just asking for trouble.

Saw two blokes trying to get the kite down adn wondered how it got there. Not sure whether I would be trying to self land with loads of people round and palm trees - particularly on a day like yesterday?

I have seen instructors at St Kilda launching kites with no leash on, hooking the student in and then securing the chicken loop to the harness of the student.

Also, are there people out there who can't self launch and land? It appears that there are. These should be the most basic skills everyone learns first (before getting on the water).

I hope there is no fallout from the kite going across St Kilda Rd. Did any cars get hit?

I agree with Longy the tree probably took 20 years to get to that stage in its life, and some dog ugly kiter plows it down taking out ten hard years of growth. Poor tree

The most important think is that you will recover. And keep kiting, it's a great sport.
As long you will remember the tree, you will be safe!
We all had our "bruised personality times", but got over.
Good luck and speedy recovery!

kites in trees and flying across the road..damn i missed the chaos, i was at stkilda untill about 4, is it happy hour after that??? lol well at least no one was hurt. I think St Kilda (my first time riding their) is a nice potential danger area, its the gusty conditions and chop IMO that make it that way, anyway most of you guys have bows so how about using that 100% depower? As far as teaching people at St Kilda..well at this point its a free for all (or do you need permits?) I didnt find them in the way, some interesting practices, helmets? well i think they are a personal choice thing but maybe in gusty on shore conditions and teaching on land might be a good idea. I learnt in the water myself, found getting dragged far less painful. In such conditions i think things are bound to happen, im a little out of shape so just did short sessions and was at times very over powered (C kite) but im feeling nice and sore and cannot wait to get the gumby out of me and get into the season. Cheers to all the chilled folk in St Kilda, everyone was helpful and welcoming.

I think this is the same one about 5pm a guy had a near miss playing on the beach with a full size kite looked to be ok then suddenly out of control on his stomach screaming towards the wall. He managed to pull his quick release before hitting the wall but with no leash the kite went onto the road luckily no one was hurt.
I have been riding at St Kilda for 3 seasons and this is the closest I have see to someone getting hit into the wall, though I have seen a lot of out of control stuff down there it usually happens down by the water and the person is usually caught by others on the beach before it gets too out of hand. This guy however was not playing down by the water but about 2/3rds up towards the wall to start with.
I know we all have to learn but a full size kite needs to be in the water and not on the beach and if you don’t have 100% depower on the throw of your bar then you need a leash.
