HI all,

im after some advice, i am just starting out getting into kite boarding, i have flown my trainer i have my equipment i have had several lessons, watched instructional dvd's until the cows came home, I'm starting to feel comfortable enough to venture out into the water.

However I'm still a bit unsure...as kite surfing is an expensive sport i don't want to damage the equipment, I don't want to get in anyones way and certainly don't want to hurt myself or worse someone else. Does anyone know of some quite places to get started at?(around sth Sydney) or is it best to be near other kite borders?

gday,

all ready done that, had a couple of lessons there with kitepower, the instructor wasn't quite clear when answering that question, but he said that i was able enough to go it alone, but i would rather try and find a quieter place first to practice before heading down there with the big boys. perhaps its just first time jitters?

One of the dillemas of the sport!

You dont want to stuff up in front of everyone, but its good to have people around that can help if things go wrong.

Its best to have other kiters around ,just try to get some space. Its really hard on the Southside. Unless you go to Wanda on a quiet day when its flat.

Most kiters will gather in a tight spot, but you can go a bit downwind or upwind to find some space.

Get someone to launch you,be nice and mention that you are a bit of a beginer. Most kiters then will be carefull launching you (a major cause of dramas) Just say "Dont let go till I give you the signal,I want to check my lines first"

Also,if its busy, the guys that gave you lessons may be around. They should (hopefully) keep an eye on you,to make sure you dont do anything crazy.

G'day KDA

Good advice from User there mate, and I would add that its best to go where the other kiters are and get in amongst them, they are a friendly bunch. You need to find another newb to pair up with, then maybe head up to one of the beaches between the groins further north than Dolls for a few weeks until you can stay upwind.

Once you can stay upwind, you will be fine at Dolls, if you cannot stay upwind Dolls is one of the worst places to practice, you will almost certainly have a kitemare and need to be rescued.

Remember in the lessons, site assessment was emphasised, or should have been.? Find a kite buddy and get into it, not a lot of summer left.

Cya and

goodwinds

if you are going out in a quiet place - its probably no good for kiting. better kite with others so they know how to help you - and to look out for you.
we've all been there.....

Don't ever come to Altona in VIC if you are learning there's some d***head with a blue cabrinha bow that can not help him self from flying as close to you as he can. I am learning to I was standing out in the water where I was happy to start from I was there puting the board on my feet trying to get going when learning this takes some time before you get it right then allong came old mate so i moved my kite down so he could go past 4 of 5 times then one time that was not good enough I had to put my kite as low as i could then allso duck my head under the water so that his lines would not hit me. Is this normal.

Sounds like a prick!!! hope I don't come across this as I'm just starting out also. I have been going down and checking the local beach and everyone seems to get along well.. with the exception of my old windsurfing buddy, but his always been a bit nuts.
