One of the spots I kite at all the time (Toogoom) is absolutely teaming with stingrays. Sometimes there's a group of them (anything from 5 to too many to count) and all hell breaks loose when you kite over the top......major action heading out in all directions. We often see them with their fins sticking out above the water.....that looks pretty wierd until you realise what they are.

I've only ever stepped on one once and I was lucky enough to not get spiked.

This saga is never ending!!
After 6 long weeks of daily visits to the doc they finally cut my stingray hole open and scraped out the ooze!!

Finally they cut it all open and stitched me up! I lost count of how many stitched they used inside.

There is still a little way to go. If I don't develop and abcess again I will be back in the water by New Years day.

MORAL:
If you see a stingray give it a wide berth. This one was the size of a dinner plate and put me out of the water and off work for 8 weeks.

The irony of it all....Talking on this topic....then bam....poor young Steve gets done by one of these....dare I say It....Bastards!

There has only ever been 17 RECORDED deaths by stingray(worldwide), only 2 in Australia!

Tell me that this isn't the most unlucky thing to happen!!!

RIP Steve Irwin. I hope you died quickly mate. The pain of getting stung in the chest would have been excruciating.

Besides having an uglier leg than usual, there have been no side effects from this injury except the occasional itch and scream of terror when I see a stingray.

It's interesting that I have received quite a few phone calls from rello's since Steve died apologising for laughing at my original plight!!

Seriously though, Steve was a Caloundra local and well respected in the surfing community. He supported local events and was an enthusiatic guy to surf with. He'll be sorely missed
