I found out yesterday that a mate is getting hitched at Straddy in April. I am wondereing if it is worth taking my gear as I will be there for 5-6 days in April (20-26th).
I am 83kgs and can take either 151 or 136cm boards and have the choice of 9, 13 or 15.5m C kites. I have to pack light though and am hoping for one kite and one board. 13m kite and 151cm board a safe bet?
Any suggestions on spots? I don't want to plonk into someone's secret spot but flat water or cruisy waves would be cool. I'm not sure about transporting the gear though?
Main beach ...you have miles of it ..but don't get too close to the headland or the wind starts getting gusty and you'll watch your kite fall.... drift into the caverns ... downwinder for thirty km's or more, the pin ..but I didn't tell you that..check the tides
I think (?) I am staying on Sth Straddy - does this sound right? Is Main beach on the Sth or Nth Island. I can't seem to get much of a map on google yet.
Cheers Fitzy - sounds definately like 13m and big board weather.
Wish I could be more specific about location (yep it's a big lump of sand allright)but my mate is in London and hard to get hold of for more juice on the details.
have spent a fair bit of time there before I kited.great surf, lots of sharkies.
from memory there are some good spots both flat and surf but didnt kite back then and have been keen to get back over there with my kite.let us know how you go.
Im not joking about the sharks, never heard a shark alarm go off so often
We camped on Flinders beach weekend before last. Wind was light NE on Sat so we did a downwinder from Amity back to camp. Sunday blew a bit more so we had a better time playing in the messy surf that Flinders gets. Better waves on main beach just didn't have time to head far enough down for the NE to work and make it back to our barge on time. Top end of the beach was in a big wind shadow from Point Lookout.
If there's enough wind Straddie can be great. Pack your gear ! Cheers, Warren
