I remember a while ago i saw a guy, well someone kiting a reef off Moffats beach. It was in a southeaster and and due to the setup of the headlands I couldn't figure out how he got there unless he did the big wide downwinder from Bulcocks or upwinded from farther north.....or is there a simpler way to get out out there as the waves looked alright and I wouldn't mind getting out there next time I'm up that way.

I'm guessing it is not that simple as this was a lone kiter while Bulcocks was pretty busy.

I know a guy who used to launch from Dickys and upwind over to Moffs , you can also launch from Shellys. It's Definitely NOT a recommended place to kite if your a beginner.

Yeah, thanks Simon.

I suppose if you do the upwind from Dickies, when your ready to leave you can just down wind to finish up.

Is it worth the effort? When I saw 'ol mate out there he was there for a while. I didn't hang around to see where he went after, but he was just catching a wave, working his way back out again and doing it again and again. And because it's a bit of a way out I couldn't tell how the wave quality was.

That's Neil st reef - you can launch from the beach at the end of Neil st that's the same place you need to come in as well. If you come in much futher north you will be too close to the flagged area at Dickie's.

It is very cross shore there even in a south easter and can be quite sketchy and gusty close to the beach. Watch out for rocks right where you need to enter the water which adds to the fun. once out 100m or so the wind cleans up a little.
You can do circuits on the reef and get some decent waves. on the right day it is my favourite spot on the coast. It dose however have a tendency to be quit messy and most days you would get better waves doing a down winder. It's always worth a look though.

You can also tack from there out under the cliffs at moffs and score some waves off the point. You want to be super mindfull of surfers in the water even if it's blown out there is always a couple of surfers on the point.

Be warned this spot can be sketchy... Gusty winds, rocks, nazi windsurfers, surfers and no ones looking out for you unless your with a buddy. Put your kite down out there on a big messy day and all of a sunden you feel very allone!

Its a long time windsurfing spot for keen windsurfers that like surfing the reef. Always show respect to these boys when they are out.

Over all if your a competent Kiter on the right day this can be a fun spot to kite and escape the norm and the crowds.

Thanks Luke,

Moffats didn't seem like an option to launch on the day I looked at it as the breeze seemed to becomming from over the headland and very sketchy. Yet it was blowing a full south easter. I think I went to Dickies and it still seemed a bit dodgy. It wasn't till I went futher north that it was solid and stable.

Anyway, next time I'll try to tack up from the noth end of Dickies and see how
I go.
