Container ship travelling from Newcastle with load of ammonium nitrate (fertiliser) in containers. Lost several containers in big seas (der) and one ripped a hole in the hull spilling fuel oil (200 tons) into our sea.

went to kawana beach first thing - high tide
still oil on the beach but not as much as yesterday - I figure a lot has been covered by sand which now means its buried in layers of sand

No sign of any cleanup

Anna Bligh is having a meeting today to work out a plan - by the time they do anything it will be well mixed into our environment -

I hope she enjoys her fresh coffee and muffins at her meeting while the turtles and fish and birds are choking on their new polluted environment

At least Bob Abbot had Bullodozers and trucks scraping up what they could - but he got told to stop by the EPA idiots who said it was not they to pick it it up and they dont want machinery on the beaches -

a disaster management plan should have been implemented immediately- I am disgusted that this could happen but absolutely distraught at the impact it is now having because it was not contained. I agree- heads should roll !!!!!!!!

They could get a million $ fine how pathetic .The Exon disaster cost them 10's of millions why is this any different an absolute ecological disaster that will remain for our life time or maybe the next generation as well.

It's not only the damage to the shore line but the fishing industry will be destroyed as well , watch the rise in imported sh!t seafood in years to come.

"THE cargo ship that caused one of southeast Queensland's biggest environmental disasters has leaked oil in the Brisbane River.

Australian Greens leader Bob Brown, who flew over the ship berthed at Hamilton at 1pm (AEST) today, says there's a 500m-long oil slick down the Brisbane River from the vessel, the Pacific Adventurer.

He said the oil had escaped a boom around the stern of the ship.

"There is a very serious oil spill now in the heart of Brisbane," Senator Brown said.

Around 100,000 litres of oil from the cyclone-stricken Pacific Adventurer have washed up on the shores of Moreton and Bribie island and parts of the Sunshine Coast.

The areas have been declared disaster zones and state and Federal authorities are responding, while the maritime watchdog is investigating the spill. "

I'm not sure about the paragraph re: Authorities responding. I was down at Kawana earlier and there were no authorities in site. Just a really strong diesel smell from that 100 000 litres!!!!.

Just a couple of quick points. Normally container ships are ok in weather such as this, they were not in the midst of the storm that was further up the coast but would have experienced some conditions. The issue is more that there has probably been an issue with the rigging of the containers to the deck. They lost 31 containers overboard and I am not surprised that they got a hole punctured in their hull. You would be surprised how many containers are lost of container ships each year. The reason they dont recover them is that they normally sink to the bottom within a day or two as very few are airtight. As to the people saying what are they doing bringing oil in close to our shore etc.. what was spilled was the fuel oil for the ship, it was not crude oil. The impact and residual from this is likely to be far less than if it was crude oil as in the issue with Exon Valdez and the event on the coast of Spain as another member mentioned. Not withstanding this, the response from the government is appalling, even the lack of comunication to the local communities is sub standard.

Does anyone know if the spill/slick has made it's way into Morton Bay at all? Just I want to go kiting tomorrow at Sandgate, been hanging out all week since last weekend when I had an excellent day on Sunday.
